I bought a 63 Valiant wagon a couple of months ago. It was missing the drivers window and has lots of sealant around the windshield gasket. Divers window was covered with plastic during the first rains. Then covered the windshield and divers window with plastic so rain couldn't get to either of them. Pulled the soaking wet carpet this weekend and dried the floor. Checked it today & again had standing water. The only place I can think of water getting in is through the cowl vent area. Any ideas? It looks like something has been leaking for a while since there are a couple of patches on the driver & passenger floors. |

(a) cowl vents- pull your fenders and clean out the drains. You might even want to drill the drain holes oversize. (b) rusted out fresh air vents. The fresh air vents have a metal lip that sticks up into the cowl area. Debris can build up around the lip and cause rustout and leaks. Remove the fresh air vent housings and inspect. (c) windshield wiper pivot seals. These are notorious for drying out and causing leaks. Crawl under your dash and look for rust trails coming from the pivots or moisture. (d) dried out windshield gasket/rusted out windshield frame. Could cause leaks around the windshield. |

Thanks. I'll have have to look at (a), (b), & (c). (d) has been covered with plastic so water hasn't been able to get to it. The inside of the fire wall is darkest around the steering column. Doesn't look like rust since water hasn't had a chance to sit there. Haven't had a chance to get to the underside of the dash yet. The passenger side vent door was taped on when I bought the car. I guess since the front seat is out now is the time to get most of the stuff out from under the dash. Thanks again. |

If had water get in from the area behind the forward kick panels on the side. Remove and put plastic over the triangular opening. |

I had removed the kickpanels & there wasn't any plastic on either side. Where is any water supposed to go if there is plastic on the kick panels so I can check to see if these areas are clogged? |

The water drain for the cowl vents is right above and between the inner panel and the fender. The water is supposed to drop vertically and exit at the bottom...Where is any water supposed to go if there is plastic on the kick panels so I can check to see if these areas are clogged? The water sometimes makes a detour to the interior from the opening into the insulation on the backside of the kickpanels... Just squirt some water into the cowl vent and see it drip down..... |
