Lets hear your nominations for a cam in a daily 225 street motor around 9.5:1 compression, a-body, auto, mild porting, F.I., Clifford intake, (maybe) headers, high 2. to low 3. gears with some semblance of fuel economy but I'd like to get at least 1hp/ci. I'd like to get 250hp or better...

Converter stall speed?
How do you like your idle quality and off-idle responce? (1000 to 2500 rpms)

It's a stock '69 converter now and was hoping I wouldn't need to upgrade if I control my right foot pressure most of the time. But if I find a A855od that's getting in there.

I don't mind a little lope, but I don't want to start creating rattles or not be able to read the gauges at a light. I'll need vacuum for power brakes. I'll have passengers. I don't want to have to snap their necks to get going from a dead stop.

I would highly suggest the Erson 280/270 cam degreed at 101 centerline, and a 2500-2700 stall converter. Very docile and almost like stock until you stand on it. You will need a good amount of headwork to hit 250 HP with 9.5:1 and a mild-ish cam.

Lou,

What is the mileage??.....that was the other part of the question...
Will it get 25 mpg? like my E254 or RV10.

What rpm does the Erson 280/270 cam start to provide power? What is the vacuum reading at that rpm once you get going?

No exact numbers yet, but I'm estimating ~25mpg highway with a 280/270 grind.

Good questions Ted.

The low end torque on this cam is simlar to stock and the mid range is much stronger. I have 5 gears so mileage is more a factor of aerodynamics and user tendencies. Big torque starts at about 2500rpm. No vacuum readings. I have a BBD and the vacuum signal is very strong, very responsive throttle.

There is no reason to think this cam would get less mileage than a stock cam and compelling reasons to think you would do better at cruising speed.

At WOT....not so much.

I think 180-200 hp is a more accurate measure of this cam with 9.5:1.
It would take a ton of headwork/fuel to get 250hp and streetability would be lost.

Well, I've gotten 24-25 MPG with a BIG cam (250 @ 0.050", 0.510") and ~250 HP, so I believe cam does not do as much as overall combo of parts and tune.

I see no reason why this cam shouldn't get good mileage if the engine is designed around it.

Mark Ethridge is making about 260 HP with this cam, but he has a really good head and has tuned the heck out of his motor.

My motor actually doesnt have 260 hp.I got 197 rear wheel on the dyno.Head never has been flowed so I really dont know how well I did it.I do have 10.7 compression.I do LOVE the 270 280 Erson cam, very good choice.Mark

I calculated 210 RWHP from your 1/4 mile speeds. So maybe you have 250 HP at the crank (200 RWHP), but in that neighborhood. Anyway, a good engine!

Besides a converter upgrade, what might I need to do to the auto trans?
