hello, to all, I'm just learning how to rebuild my 225 dodge dart, and I'am having trouble with my pushrods, I just bought a new set, and 4-5 of the rods are up, and not allowing me to screw them down, can some-one please explain. Thanks Pat

Uh, yeah, those pushrods that won't go all the way down are for the valves that are open while the engine is in this particular rotational position.
If you rotate the camshaft / engine, all the pushrods will move up and down in turn, as the lobes of the camshaft cause the lifters to lift, pushing the pushrods up and, if they are in place, rocking the rocker arms, which open the valves.

There is no "tighten to 7 ftlbs" spec. - where did you see that??

When building an engine, I drop-in all 12 pushrods then install the rocker arm assembly. You have to get all the rocker arm shaft bolts started, then tighten them all down evenly, a couple of turns on each, until the assembly seats on the head towers. You need to check to make sure the push rod cup end stays on the rocker arm "ball stud" as you slowly tighten all the bolts.
A few of the valve springs will compress as you tighten the rocker arm shaft down.

After the assembly is installed with all the push rods in position, do the valve lash adjustment. You will need to turn the engine a few times as you check the lash settings.

Nope. You need a lot more to make it run right.

Search through the FAQ's and articles. Search the board for Valve Lash, and so forth. Your going to need to find the torque spec as well.

If your new to mechanics, you might want to get somebody to help you along. Coming here is a great resource, yet having somebody that has a lot of experience makes a big difference.
See if somebody on here lives close to you, and get a hand. After you've done a few of these things, it gets a lot easier.

I found great info from slantsix dan, thank you all for the help, and the detailed descriptions, back to work, well see what happens.

the most important thing you can do is refer to a good workshop manual,preferably a factory issued one.
however,here is a line drawing to show you where the adjustment point for the valves is,and the locknut to adjust them.
if you do not have a manual,I suggest you at least borrow one,maybe from your local library, to complete your job.
mistakes can be costly.

Well, I tried to fire it up today, and a flame came through the carb, but it just wouldn't start, now I'am back to troubleshooting, but yea I live in Beaverton, Oregon. Thanks
