I know I should buy the books dan suggests but no funds for now. Looking for some things on my car to see if they are functioning correctly.
charcoal canister filter, crankcase breather (valve cover?), and PCV. also looking to remove my EGR valve completely. any advice would be great

PCV valve is grommeted into the valve cover (middle hole -- the frontmost is the oil filler cap, and the rearmost is the crankcase breather)

Charcoal can filter is on underside of charcoal can, which is the black plastic cylinder at the right front corner of the engine bay.

You've sent me several PMs about removing your EGR valve. I'm not sure why you are fixated on doing so, but it will really be best if you do not remove anything until you have a full understanding of what it is and how it works and why it's there. If you were to remove your EGR valve, you'd need to install a blockoff plate, which would cost you one or two books' worth of funds you say you don't have. So for now, don't touch. Save up your cents and dollars. There are a lot of things more important to the proper running of your car than randomly removing bits and parts you don't understand.

Hi Eric, welcome to the forum. I don't know what written material you have at hand, but one thing that can help you, and that you definitely ought to have for the future, is the original factory service manuals. They explain to a large extent how the the components work, and how to service them. See this link for a selection of manuals on cd. I think the price is around $50, what you need is the 'chassis-body' and the 'electrical' service manuals. Another important source is all the stuff you can find here in the forum by using the search function, there is an incredible wealth of information available at your fingertips for free. Read also the FAQ in each section, there's a lot of links to useful stuff there, and check out all the material in the articles section. I have managed to keep my car running for many years with a minium of money available, so I know how it is! One of your best friends is a beast called Google, there is a world of free stuff online!
Happy slanting! 8)

I thank you for all the info. I will keep my egr valve but I dont know if its working or even connected to the correct vacume line... the EGR located Under the carb, on the side of the intake manifold, has a line running from/to the radiator. is that hooked up right?the breather on the rear end of the valve cover is connected to the air filter housing, correct? and the pcv on the front of the valve cover should hook up towards the bottom of the carb, right?

You can check that a couple of different ways. With the engine idling, apply strong vacuum to the EGR valve (which, yes, is located on the outboard end of the intake manifold, below the carb). The idle should get markedly worse or the engine should stall. To see if the EGR control system is working, with the engine fully warmed up, moderately rev the engine by hand and watch the EGR valve stem to see if it moves. If you want to try disabling it to see what effects it has on how your engine runs, simply remove and plug the vacuum hose that goes to it.

Probably. The valve screwed into the radiator's top tank blocks vacuum to the EGR valve until the engine (coolant) has reached a particular temperature.

Yes and yes.

Where are you in Oregon Eric?

Perhaps we have somebody that can give you a hand with your car.

We have folks in most of the major population centers, and a few in obscure locations, like Halsey and so forth.

Many of us have the odd part lying around as well.
