Post subject:  valve lash after rebuild

so i just installed the roker arm assembly back on the head, everything is all nice and bolted up, but my concern/paranoia is the fact when the other valves are closed the end play is scary Image

is this norm ?? i didn't mess with the arm adjuster nuts at all when i pulled the assembly, just pulled, cleaned, and reinstalled, the cam is an oregon cam 280/270 INT/EXT 110deg LSA, everything else is bone stock new bearings, and a fresh cylinder hone. is it like that cause the engine is upright instead of leaning on the stand (cause it scared me when it was leaning lol). does the lean help keep the adjuster ball seated when she is leaning over ??

Did you have the valves ground while it was apart??

Two things come to mind.
1) cam is a regrind, which will have a smaller base circle, so the lifter/pushrod will be lower.
2) you probably used an aftermarket "composition" head gasket, which is thicker then the OEM gasket.
If you did not mill the head or block, the rocker shaft will be further up from the cam.

Both of these factors will increase the valve clearance.
The engine leaning or straight up, does not effect valve lash.
Any time you have the rocker assy off the head, the valves SHOULD be readjusted. Anytime the changes you made, are done, the valves MUST be readjusted. They must be set to the clearance the cam grinder specifies.

ok so hopefully i will have enough to adjust it down, so should i snug them up and set the lash looser the the cam card says cause she is cold, and recheck when shes hot, i wanted to set the lash while she was running, how much oil will be pouring out of the top ?? ,

so real fast, the motor has to be spun over until the valves on that cylinder are closed, and then thats when you check lash correct ??

Rotate the motor by turning the crank until the cylinder you want to adjust has reached the top position. watch the distributer rotor as it points to the proper cylinder, just adjust that one rotate to next and adjust that cylinder. Firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4
