Post subject:  crank vent system

i was wondering how one would modify the crankcase ventilation system so that it doesn't suck oil into the carburetor, as it appears mine does. I know it's not supposed to do that, but the pcv valve is free, and the foam filter thing looks good, i don't know what else it could be. on a slightly unrelated note, is there supposed to be a small hole on the bottom of a holley 1920 that opens directly to the throat?

Sounds like you have other underlying problems. Have you adjusted the valves and done a compression test? I would have to see the "hole" but it is most likly ok.

i have not done a valve adjustment yet, but when i got the car four months ago the compression was 118, 119, 120, 119, 118, 117, front to back. i just replaced the manifold gasket, i need to adjust the carb and timing proper, so i can get the engine slow enough to do the valves, unfortunately, i'm not good at that. i'm kind of a newb, last time i tried it got worse.

Double ck your pvc valve by placing a small sheet of paper on it and rev the engine. It will show you if it working properly............I chased this problem for two weeks on a new pvc valve. It was defective. I couldn't imagine that it could be bad.
The paper should stick If it working properly.
Good luck with it

it appears the pcv valve was bad after all  , new one in, i think i'll replace some of the hoses on the breather cap, as they look rather cracked and original. i'll see how it goes, i got the engine settled down smoother, has some extra vibration still, hopefully that will go away when i set the timing proper

Good deal, PVC valves are inexpensive.............and your idea to ck vacuum leaks is a very, very good idea................best to you

regarding the hole in the 1920 is it on the driverside in the middle somewhat . close to the idle adjustment screw ?????? or is it right under in the corner of the of the float . actually under where accelerater pump is it at ? mine has the same hole and my second holley had both

the hole is on the driver's side angled down towards the throat of the carb, near the bottom; so far as i can tell it's manufactured in, but it's allowing unfiltered air to the engine, that's why i'm concerned, it's about 3/32" diameter

try plugging it with clay or something simular............see what happens. could be good or could be bad .........only way to find out for sure huh?
