HELLO, ME AND MY DAD R NEW TO THE SLANT 6'S WE RECENTLY BOUGHT A 68' VALIANT AND WE BOUGHT A ENGINE FROM A 80' PLYMOUTH VOLARE. WE CANT GET THE COVER OFF THE TIMING CHAIN. CAN N E ONE HELP US OUT PLEASE? THANK YOU, BALDO66H@AOL.COM |

Did you remove the bolts that come in underneath from the pan? CJ |

the ones on the outside? the oil pan is still on and we have not yet removed it |

Loosen the pan bolts back about 1/2 way along the block. You will find it easier to get the cover off the locating dowls once the pressure is off of them. Leave them loose, or putting the cover back on will be a real pain! CJ |

Is the engine out of the car? If so, remove the pan. It will make things easier!  CJ Edit: Oh Geeze Ceej... Read the whole first post! Yes! remove the pan. Should make things much easier.  Ya gotta watch me sometimes. I'm relatively new to this reading thing.

i dnt have the engine in the car, just saying. the pulley is still on also. we removed the three small bolts off the pulley, and there r still 3 screw studs sticking out |

You will need to remove the Harmonic balancer. Use the correct tool to do this. If you try to pry it or use a standard puller, you will damage it. CJ |

Hmmm. Perhaps somebody can help you with the pics. You need to go buy or borrow a Harmonic Balancer Puller. You really need to have a manual for your car. There is a great deal of information you will need to know. Look around in the articles section of this site, and look at the Frequently asked questions section in this part of the forum. Read this first, then go after the chain. Hopefully somebody can post some torque specs for you. There is information about degreeing the cam and so forth, but that requires some more tools. I'm going to take a guess that they are not readily available to you. If you can wait until you can get a Factory Service Manual, you will have the best document available to work on your car. There is very little difference between the 80 and the 68, though there are a few details if you delve deeply. There are online options for getting these documents, but none of them are inexpensive. I have FSM's for all my cars. It's the way to go. At the very least get yourself one of the motors manuals by Clymer or Haynes. They are best used to prop the shop door open, or light camp fires, but in a pinch you can glean some useful information from them. CJ |

Maybe try drilling into this site,login as indianhead password trial.Don't think it will go back as far as 68 but will pull up info on 80 year/models/engine. Worth a shot while you're waiting to get a good manual http://search.ebscohost.com/ |
