well, i got the slant out today and like i figured, its got a bad crank journal and rod. i dont know what the last owner was thinking, but i drained out 12 thats right, 12 quarts of oil out of it, not counting the filter. i guess he figured if he put enough oil in it, it would quit knockin. lol. any way, the two questions i have is, 1, the cyls. has a groove at the top you can barely hang a sharp finger nail on. do you think it would take a good ring job, or just be wasting my time? 2, how much play should the rockers have on the shaft? they twist a little, like you put a 1/2 nut on a 3/8 bolt. thats the best way i can describe it. i need to figure out if i can overhaul it or just plan on a new engine.

You'll need to measure the bore and taper to determine what is appropriate as far as pistons or rings. Everything will need to be measured to figure that out.

What is the goal with the car? If your going to build a performance engine, then start with the one you have. If your looking for something to stuff back in the engine compartment to fetch groceries with, a good running used one may be cheaper. The problem is finding a used motor that is guaranteed good. Might be back to rebuilding something.

Measure things first. See what you have to work with. You can get a rocker shaft and rockers to replace your worn ones.

thanks, we plan on building a real nice car for show and go. we'll keep the motor completly stock including the exhaust sys. i figure i can build a good looking muscle car and still get 20 mpg while driving. my fast car and loud muffler days are long gone. lol. i might be better of with new long block instead of buying a bunch of parts. dave.
