I am thinking of replacing the original fuel tank in my 66 Dart. How difficult is that to accomplish? It looks like there is one strap (and 40+ years of undercoating and grime) holding it on. Thanks.

Procure a new rubber filler donut, overhaul or replace the fuel level sender/sock/gasket.

Put penetrating oil on the bolt holding the strap on, drain the tank of most of the fuel, disconnect the rubber fuel line from the tank and sender wire, remove the strap, work the tank off the filler tube (some rubber treatment may help).

Clean any abrasive junk off of the filler tube, install the new donut gasket, work the new tank onto the filler, place new piece of tar paper between the tank and car body, reinstall strap. Hook up everything else.

I'm sure I've forgotten a few things, but that's basically it.

Phogrian pretty much covered everything.I did this job just yesterday on my 63 Dart and it took about an hour.I will suggest to pull the right rear wheel,it makes it easier to get to the fuel line.BTW,I got my tank and sending unit from vansauto.com for $235 shipped to my door.That also included a new filler neck grommet.
Also,my j bolt broke and was able to procure a suitable replacement at the local farm store for a whopping $1.04.

Hey HyperValiant-

I need to take the tank from my 63 Dart wagon out. Figuring because it's a wagon, the tank's probably different than the sedan, and the sending unit too. Gonna have to have the tank boiled out and clean the sending unit instead of hunting down new ones. How difficult is it to remove the sending unit from the tank, and do you need anything special to do it?

rockauto.com shows a new tank for your '63 for just under $164. New tanks really are the best way to go if they are available.

Thanks Joshua. I'll have to check into this: I believe the tank for the wagon is different than the tank for the cars. Don't see that offered. Of course, I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

This makes me ask the question: are fuel tanks for wagons different than sedans? Mine is a 1963 Dart wagon. Parts list book only shows one tank, but the new available tanks look somewhat different than my original.

The fuel tank for the station wagon is the same as the other A-Body vehicles, it is the filler tube is different for the wagons.

63 fuel tanks are a "one year only" item that used a large o-ring in a recess groove, where the filler tube enters the tank, this was a carry-over from the early cars. (60-62 "Toad" cars)

By 1964 the filler tube seal and tank entry area changed to the larger grommet, this style is interchangeable with your filler tube.

Thanks Doc. So, the replacement parts I need to get for this process are:

1) new fuel filler grommet

2) new fuel sender unit o-ring gasket.

Question: is the sock on the sending unit a replace-able alone item, or do I need to purchase an entirely new sender? Trying to be cost-effective here. Going to clean the old sending unit with carb cleaner first.
