I have a '66 Dart an A904 (automatic), looking through the service manual it recommends using AQ-ATF suffix "A" transmission fluid. Do they still make this stuff, and who would carry it? Is there a better alternative? The car is my daily driver.

Most fluids marked Dexron-III/Mercon will work fine. ATF+4 is also a good choice, but more expensive. There is lots of info on the WWW if you look. Here's a brief FAQ on the Valvoline web site. http://www.valvoline.com/faqs/system-fl ... ion-fluid/

If you want to spend way too much time reading about oils and lubricants you can always go to bobistheoilguy.com

I always run type F in everything except my D350. I use the ATF+4

When I removed the transmission in mine I replaced everything with ATF+4 and sealed her up. Been using it since 2002 with nary a problem, though the trans shifted kinda "gritchy" (for lack of a better descriptive term) compared to the old fluid, but it settled down after a few miles and now shifts as smoothly as ever.

In the end I went with ATF+4. So far, so good. I also noticed a slightly rougher shift the first 10-20 miles, but its starting to smooth out nicely.

As a side note. I went with the rigid style gasket, those are so odd, but they seem pretty cool.
