Just wondering what some of you have done to prep your engines for painting while on a stand?

I'm going to buy some small brass brushes today and use the Citrus engine cleaner and then if that works it's TSP before paint. But I have to tell you this will be the 5th time with engine cleaner and I scrapped TONS of gunk off first. This is a major PIA.

Help.

Thanks

6(b)9,

Clean & clean & clean it some more. Once the grease & loose stuff is off, rinse any detergent residue off with clear water. Follow paint manufactures instructions for preparation & application. It is all you can do.

10-4. The darn thing is just really stubborn, but anything worth doing is worth doing right.

Thanks

Yes, "Marine Clean"......it is a www.por15.com product. It is extremely good for cleaning the engine before painting. I have been using their products for about 8 years now. I can't say enough good about them. The engine paint is awesome! I just follow their process, Marine Clean, Metal Ready and Paint. Both Marine Clean and Metal Ready are water soluble.

I use their products on all parts of the car. :)

Just an FYI, I bought a Citrus degreaser at Home Depot last night. Non aerosol and it works great. Better than any other one I've ever used. I think it's their "Zep" brand. Killer stuff.

Scrub scrub scrub.

I have had good results with Home Depot's Zeb branded stuff.

The o nly metal prep I have found that does not require rinsing with water, is Captain Lees Metal Prep. Everything else everyone has said here is spot on. But I really never liked having to apply water to bare steel or iron after cleaning it. It just seems it is likely to start rust again.

The POR products are great, but be prepared to wait a bit for the engine paint to dry. I found it took multiple coats to get it to cover as well. What I thought I might try, but wanted to test it first, was to paint first with rattle can engine paint, and then treat that as a primer and paint over it with POR engine paint. That way it would only take one coat, and would speed things up.

Sam

Sam,

With the POR15 products like Marine Clean and Metal Ready Primer, I rinse with hot water and use a hair dryer. That way I can paint with only 30 minutes drying time. Most of the POR15 products cure faster with high humidity which is the opposite from all other paint. I find this to be an unusual feature, but handy when your trying to do work outside with out a carport or garage.

So don't let it slow you down......soon as the Metal Ready primer turns white I give it about 15 to 30 minutes more minutes and start painting. Parts of my car have had POR15 on it for 10 years or more with out top coating and it is hard as a rock! :)
