I replaced the transmission on my 1965 valiant and I took the cable linkage off on the steering column. Now I can not get it back on for the life of me!!! There are two cables, one that appears to be for the park and the other for the gears. The one for the gears seems to be linked to a pin that is sort of at the front of the linkage set up and the other seems to be for a pin on the back of the linkage set up. I removed them a week ago so I still remember where things go, but I just can't get the one on the back pin. Or even find the back pin for that matter. Any suggestions? Also, I totally ruined the rubber boot that covered the shift linkage and I don't see how I could get another one on there. Should I just make one or what? Thanks ahead of time for anyone's help and a little piece of advice for anyone else out there thinking of changing a transmission on this vintage of car. Take the cables off at the transmission and not on the column. Also, I tried looking in the service manual but I can not find any photos off the way things should be. Would anyone have such a picture? Thanks |

This is a "one year only" application... a 45 year old, one year only application at that. And yes... if you have to remove the transmission, the FSM directs you to remove the cables from the gearbox and not from the steering column. All that aside, I have done this job in the past, in order to replace a bad shift cable. I need to review my 65 FSM for details but it can be done. As for the big rubber boot, that will be a hard item to find. NOS Mopar parts sources are your best bet. DD |

Hi Thanks for getting back to me. Any information you supply will be greatly appreciated. As for the rubber dust cover. I lucked out and found a wrecker that has one and he will send it to me. He is a mopar guy and he told me that as a rule, those things usually tear when ever anyone is working on them (he may have said that just for the benefit of my feelings) and said that people just wrap it in duct tape until (or if) they find a replacement. I got some bad advice when I was told to remove the cables from the column. |

Well, with a mirror, a set of tweezers, two broken fingernails and an awful lot of bad language, I managed to get the cables back on!! But please, any more suggestions or advice are all appreciated. Thanks again everyone for your feedback. |
