Car info 1966 Dart 270 (225; 904 automatic; 7 1/4). Not much as far as plans for the car other than daily driver with some extra power. Now for the questions... 1) How likely am I to find the Dana clutch type Sure-Grip, and how much would it cost me (including if I have to rebuild it)? 2) If I pull just the SG out of an 8 3/4 will it fit in my 7 1/4? 3) If 8 3/4 SG into a 7 1/4 won't happen, how much would I be looking at to swap to a 8 3/4 SG rear end? Other considerations and comments are greatly appreciated! Sorry if I'm asking some odd questions but I've just started reading about and toying with the idea of a SG in my 7 1/4. |

No internal parts from an 8 3/4 fit the 7 1/4. There were clutch type Sure Grips for the 7 1/4, but they are rare, but a few have come through the For Sale section here. A complete Sure-Grip A-body 8 3/4 could easily cost you $700. The last complete A-body 8 3/4 I ran across was was $500 with an open differential. If you can find a decent condition Sure-Grip 8 3/4 3rd member for less than $300 buy it. About 10 years ago I paid $400 for a bare rebuilt Sure-Grip to put in my 3rd member. If you're not drag racing you can usually fit enough tire under the car that it's not a problem to hook it up without Sure-Grip. The car in my signature has a hard time spinning those 255/47R17s on wet pavement with an open diff. Still, I do have a Sure-Grip to go in the 8 1/4 for when the new motor goes in. The car runs about 17 flat in the 1/4 with a 3-speed manual. New motor should get it in the 14s. |

If you are not anal, about keeping the car all Mopar, a 8 inch Ford rear is an option.They can usually be found for a reasonable price, and there are many parts available. There are several different versions (width) so you will have to take a tape measure with you, but the correct unit is almost a direct bolt in. This is also a large bolt pattern rear (4 1/2). You can search this site for info on using this rear. I have a couple of 7 1/4 SG rears (not for sale), and they are fairy hard to find, and if the clutches are bad, you may not be able to find replacement clutches.I have been looking (not hard) for several years. Personally, I would not spend the money for a 8 3/4 "A" body rear. If you want a 8 3/4 (really overkill for a slant six daily driver), get one from a truck, late "B" "C" or "E" body, get it narrowed, with new axles, and you will have better parts, for less money. An 8 1/4 "A" rear is also an option. |
