| Post subject: | What ball stud bracket and Zbar for a 70 Duster?? |
Good day to all....my combination is 70 Duster, cast iron bell housing with a A833 four speed. Hooker Super comps, My Z bar came from Brewers and is 8'' overall which is supposed to be for a slant six. I bought a rebuild kit from the dealer which came with a bracket and ball stud welded to it. This bracket does not reach the Z bar, nor does it appear like it would line up with the ball stud on the inner fender even if it were spaced off the bell housing....either I have the wrong bracket or Z bar or both? Is anybody running an cast iron bell housing in a 70 A Body? I would appreciate any and all comments, I am close to finally getting this car on the road after two years and this is holding me up. Thanks Derek |

Best bet is to get the part number off the bellhousing and then call someone like Brewers or Passon Performance and sort it out. It is possible that the correct parts do not exist for your combination of vehicle, engine and bellhousing. Not every combination exists but the popular ones should all be available. |

FYI, there are two z-bar stud/bracket mounts for dusters and slant sixes: the 1970-1972 uses an offset ballstud and bracket at the frame rail and the bracket on the bellhousing is offset due to the position the engine is mounted with the sandwich mounts 1967-1972 (all A-body)... The advent of spool mounts 1973-1976, the bellhousing bracket changed and the ballstud now mounts through a hole in the fender with a reinforcing plate attached to the frame rail...Any 1967-1972 can be "converted" to this system using all the donor parts from that same generation vehicle (so if doing a swap from a floor shift 3 speed in your 1967 Valiant, to an A-833OD....just swap the bellhousing, Z-bar and it brackets and studs from the -73-76 car...or swap the bellhousing bracket and use the 1967-1972 linkage. -D.Idiot |

Thanks for the input, I guess I already have the 73-76 ball stud and reinforcment ( I didn't realize they were different from 70-72) I have made a template for the bell housing ball stud to make it parallel with the fender side and the Z bar I do have I believe to be the correct lenght. If that all works out tonite I can then relocate the push & pull brackets on the Z bar. I appreciate the help..Thanks again. Derek |

I was just working on a project in my shop where we couldn't get the z bar to line up properly. Turns out the guy had swapped over to an OD bellhousing and the ball stud mount is located higher on those bellhousings. I didn't even know that until we started to research the issue and found out that the OD bellhousing required a unique ball stud mount. This was a '68 Valiant V8 car but the lesson is the same. Sometimes when you start mixing and matching parts you run into a dead end. |
