| Post subject: | a Couple Questions about the 225 *PIC* |
Hi, I have a Couple Questions about the 225.. I was wondering if the engine in the photo below is a 225? Secondly, if the motor has been sitting for about a year.. Is it relatively easy to turn it over by hand? It seemed like it took little effort. I am interested in buying a 1967 Plymouth Signet down the road for 200$ There is allot of mystery to it. The person has never seen it run. I am more or less going to buy it with the hopes that it will start, and the hopes that everything ells will be ok with it as well..All the electrical seems to work, All the person knows is that it needs a clutch. The battery is dead but I was able to turn it over using jumper cables, and using my hands. Is it worth the risk? http://www.ihwy.com/~tdunn/1967signet.JPG Thanks for any comments or help, Regards, Tom |

: Hi, I have a Couple Questions about the 225.. : : I was wondering if the engine in the photo : below is a 225? Looks more like a 170, but it's tough to see from the photos you pointed to. It is blue, which is not the original color for a '67 Slant-6, so this may be a replacement engine. I also notice it has the "Green Weenie" valve aft of the air cleaner. This is indicative of the Clean Air Package, which may indicate a California car (or California engine). : : Secondly, if the motor has been sitting for : about a year.. Is it relatively easy to turn : it over by hand? It seemed like it took : little effort. If the engine is worn and has low compression, it'll be easy to turn. If it's seized-up, it'll be impossible to turn. If it's in decent, usable shape it'll be "kinda hard" to turn. : : The person has never seen : it run. It's a gamble. Don't bet more than you can afford to lose. : : a clutch. The battery is dead but I was able : to turn it over using jumper cables, and : using my hands. Check the engine oil level, add oil until it's full, grab a spray can of carburetor cleaner and an assistant. Connect your jumper cables (Always remember to be careful with jumper cables! Spray a good healthy shot of carburetor cleaner into the carb and close the choke by hand. Activate the starter. See if it runs! redbear@vrx.net |

Thanks for the info, a nice reply! I'm hoping that the motor has normal compression. I checked the oil and it looked OK, but a little low. So it might be easy to turn over if there isn't any oil under the rings (if it matters) Thanks again for your help! Regards, Bolt_Snypr |

For $200 - I'd take it right now - and I don't have any money - I would have to find someone to borrow it from!! My 2cents worth!! Later, Dan |

: I was wondering if the engine in the photo : below is a 225? Look at the water by-pass hose, engine ID number or the block casting numbers to see what engine it is. (see this link to our articles section) http://www.slantsix.org/articles/sa-franks-book/pg2.jpg : : Secondly, if the motor has been sitting for : about a year.. Is it relatively easy to turn : it over by hand? It seemed like it took : little effort. This is good, it turns! I have never come accross a Slant that "turned-over" that I could not make run. ( I have even gotten "frozen" ones to break loose and run!) Now just because you get it to run does not mean that it may have a major problem like a rod knock, blown or stuck rings, leaking or burnt valves, etc. but once you get it started any problem(s) can be quickly discovered. I would pull the plugs one at a time, squirt-in some WD-40 and replace the plug with a cleaned or new one. As you do this, check to see if there is spark by holding a plug on the head (ground) and cranking the engine, a spark should jump the gap. I have a small squirt bottle which I use to fill the carb's float bowl with gas. ( squirt gas into the brass bowl vent tube you see at the top of the carb) Stick -in a fresh battery and "light it off". Listen to how it cranks-over, you should hear even pulses, "thump-thump-thump-thump-thump-..." If it "jumps through" compression strokes, than it's time to pull-off the valve cover and check the valve lash. This is a good deal if the engines runs OK, go get it started and search the messages here for more discussions on getting an engine started. Search for key words "starting engine" (all)or try other search strings. (start engine, first time engine starting, etc) DD : : Thanks for any comments or help, : : Regards, Tom |
