I found a 1977 Plymouth volare with a 225/super six. what kind of rear-end would this car have in it. I am thinking I will take this for my 1975 dart standard six 225 with holly (1945). could/ would this rear-end work in my car with no big job with change-out?? I have the motor now and it was complete with everything on the car. The car was VERY RUSTY!!! The car broke in half when we tried to move it to my place!! So I have to pull all the items off in a hay field, and this is a pain!! the car only has 56,000 on it. The motor is for a back up and will need to be gone through before I use it.

you probably dont wan't that rear. I put an F-body rear in my 70 Valiant, I had to remove the spring perches and weld on new ones. your shock plates should work, I think by 75 even the 7 1/4 rears had 3" axle tubes. The main problem is the Volare rear is wider. It fit in my Valiant but there was very little wiggle room, I couldn't use more than a 195/75R14 tire. Unless it is a stick shift car it probably has the same 2.76 gears as your Dart.

If it's a 7 1/4 rear it seems like a lot of work for not a lot of result.


If it's an 8 1/4 it *might* be worth it.

Even if you are upgrading to a super 6 I see no reason to change the rear.

Take a look at the info on rear axles at dippy.org, there are all the measurments. You'll find that the rear axle is a 7.25" or a 8.25", and that they fit ALL the F/M/J-bodies from 1976 to 1989. If you decide to keep it, try to keep the brackets that bolts the springs to the body too, it makes things easier for someone who want to use it later on. Some came with Sure-Grip limited slip diffs, and are easier to sell. And remember to take a look at the prices for small parts for F-bodies on eBay before you throw anything away! There are always people in this forum that may need something too.

Hay thanks, I thought it might work, but it sounds like it may just have to stay in the junker. I was thinking it might work for a back-up part. I have a rear from a 1964-65 that I may just fix-up and use if need be. Just need to change out the brake size 9" to 10" and paint it. I just like having extra parts as back up IF I CAN GET IT FOR FREE OR CHEAP IN $$$. I am one hell of a cheap ass. My truck has 300,987 miles and still going strong. my wife wants me to upgrade with a newer one and less miles but I just can't let it go!!

You can't change from the 9" brakes to 10", the ends of the axle tubes are different.

If you need a spare big brake rear I have one laying in my shop that I will probably never use.
