Post subject:  Cam vs. Clearance

For my first performance duece and a quarter slant six, I want to use the Mopar Perf. 284-.528 cam. Using cast pistons with no valve notch, how much can I cut the block and head before the valves start banging the pistons. I'd like to be able to cut a total of .200 off the block and head. If I can't get close to this number, I'll look at a different game plan. Using Mopar's formula, this cam figures to be 241@.050 duration.

with stock rods and piston pin hight you should be able to go 100 off the head and 100 off the block easy. I ran that combo for years.

Thanks Will. I'll go ahead and order the cam since I can get the compression I want. When I get it I'll put it in a stock motor to make sure there's .290 clearance (.100 headcut, .100 blockcut, and .090 valve clearance). I didn't want to buy the cam, make the cuts and then find out the valves are too close to hitting. If I can get .100 block and .060 head I'll be happy.

You should have no trouble with that combo.

Happy building,
