SO.. I was going to my friend's kid's b-day party yesterday with the wife in the 65 D100 that I have had for about 1.5 months. It was her first time on the freeway with me in the truck. I was in 3rd gear going up an on-ramp to the 101 and all of a sudden "P O P!!!" comes from the trans area. (NP435 granny first for the record) The wife looks at me and says, "what the F**K was that?" I told her it was probably just a rock flying off the tire to calm her and kept close to the shoulder the rest of the way. It seemed to drive "ok" most of the time except for every once and a while it would feel like there would be a huge strain on the motor that would last a fraction of a second then it would be fine again.
So, This morning I drained the trans and the oil looked REAL pretty. Like it got a metal flake paint job... THEN I started pulling out little chunks of metal... THEN ... well see the pics... I pulled all this out of the drain plug hole...
My question is. Anyone know what the hell this was? my trans doesn't seem to shift any differently or make any stranger-than-normal sounds yet, this looks like it might be important. It appears to be aluminum... or at least non-magnetic.
Can I still drive this thing until it dies completely? Or if I do drive it, could it blow up and kill me or do something crazy like lock up my rear wheels on the freeway and make me loose control? This truck is my daily driver and I don't have the space to pull it apart and rebuild it now. Nor do I have the time to hunt down crazy broken parts. What NP435's will interchange?
Or better yet... anyone have a NP435 sitting around they wanna sell? ;)

SORRY!! lots of questions here I know... THANKS!!!

OH this happened at the beginning of my trip BTW... I finished a 50 mile round trip after this all happened. The "sudden loss of power" I figured I was feeling was little bits of metal getting sucked up and churning around in the trans. lol I refilled it with 80-90W gear oil in case I can just keep driving it until it stops completely. I was going to put Lucas' fancy oil additive in there but... when I pulled all this out I figured it was not worth it if I only had another few hundred miles on this thing... if any at all.. lol

OK so upon looking on the Internets for an exploded view of a similar trans This piece seems to be a part from the synchronizer assembly. My question is... Will driving this trans like this just make it harder to shift from time to time? I already have to double-clutch to go from third to second... no big deal... but will there be way to much slop from that piece missing to cause a HUGE problem? Or will it just require more double-clutching... I know I have no Synchros between 1st, 2nd and 3rd. And I know there are Synchros between 3rd and 4th. So I am assuming that this piece is from that assembly. I dunno... I am totally fine with being wrong... It's not like it hasn't happened before. lol

I would venture to guess that it will be slowly eating itself up. A lot would depend on how much damage it did to the other parts it came in contact with. It is a great time to start looking for another trans or a rebuild shop.

If it's brass, it's a synchronizer ring.

Hey guys! sorry for the delay... my Email decided to stop telling me that replies were happening here. lol
I managed to find another guy near me (I am in Hollywood) that had a 66 D100 he was parting out. It had a 318 in it but the trans was a NP435 so I went to pull his. After getting it home, cleaning it up, changing the fluid and throwing it in my truck (which, between pulling the new one, pulling my old one and putting in my new one within 24 hours I got my bench pressing done for the week...) I took it around the block. There is no granny 1st in this new one. I found a chart online that had the different ratios of 4 speeds that I found interesting:

"There are a few variations and derivatives. Ford, Chrysler, and GM all used them:
NP420 (H) 6.68/3.10/1.69/1.00/8.25 Chrysler '56-68
NP435 (H) 4.78/2.39/1.37/1.00/ Chrysler
NP435A (H) 4.56/2.28/1.31/1.00/5.64 GM '63-72 Chrysler '63-85
NP435D (H) 4.90/2.29/1.19/1.00/6.06 GM '63-72
NP435E (H) 6.68/3.34/1.74/1.00/8.26 Ford '64-85
NP435L (H) 6.68/3.34/1.66/1.00/8.26 Ford '64-85/GM '64-72/IHC '64-85/Chrysler '63-85 [this one is the most common]
NP4500 (H) 6.69/3.34/1.66/1.00/5.96 IHC '70-78(all synchro version of the NP435) not to be confused with the NV4500
NP4500 (H) 4.56/2.28/1.31/1.00/5.65 Chrysler '70-79 (all synchro)(also called NP445)
NP4500 (H) 4.56/2.28/1.31/1.00/4.07 GM '67-72
A833 (M) 3.09/1.67/1.00/0.74/3.00 Chrysler '76-85
NP440 (M) 3.09/1.67/1.00/0.73/3.00 GM '81-85 similar to A833"

I figure the trans I put in is the 435, 435A or 435D. Which actually works out for me better anyway since I have a 2WD truck and don't haul heavy loads much at all. My truck is more a daily driver than anything so the granny first was sort-of moot. However, I think I will rebuild the Trans that came with my truck and keep it as a spare... or sell it... I dunno yet but I am pretty sure that what broke in it was part of the 3/4 synchro assembly.
Anyway, thanks a TON guys for, if nothing else, the support. lol It is nice to have somewhere/someone to go over these things with and give/receive advice. ;)
