| Post subject: | question about my three on the tree transmission |
hello, forgive me, i'm not entirely certain what "model" of transmission i have. i have a 1965 dodge dart, with a 225 slant six, and a three speed "three on the tree" manual transmission. i just bought this car, and the first thing i've noticed is unless i'm at a COMPLETE STOP, and i mean COMPLETE stop, it grinds going into first gear. now in my limited knowledge of cars, i thought i remembered that some older cars didn't have synchros for first gear. is that the case with my car? or is it just that the synchro is probably bad, and if that's the case, what are my options? thanks, brian |

You should have an A903 in your '65. It's true that there is no synchronizer for 1st gear and it will protest if you attempt to shift to 1st while rolling. It's just how you have to drive the thing. You can stop before selecting 1st, double clutch, or grind it. I have the same basic trans in my '67 Valiant. |

If you should decide to "upgrade"... You can look for a 1971-1974 Dart/Valiant/Duster/Demon/DartSport with an A-230 3-speed to swap in...it has the synchro 1st gear...and should bolt up without much trouble, if everything swaps over linkage wise. As with any junkyard tranny, it's good to have it checked out by a trusted shop before installing it. -D.Idiot |

Or convert the car to an 833 4-speed, that is a big improvement. DD |

This is my remedy. When downshifting from second to first. Depress clutch shift to neutral. Release clutch. depress clutch shift into second and then down to first. Grinding is greatly reduced works up to about 5 mph any faster and thees more grinding |
