Since my engine is stock, I don't need the extra strength or cost of a 8-3/4, so I'm going the 8-1/4 route in my '64 Valiant. That also makes it easier to get the big bolt pattern that I want.

To those that have done this swap, is there anything special that I should consider before doing it? Any special year I should look for? Are the U-joints larger on the 8-1/4?...or is it a bolt-up? What about brake hoses?

It is a bolt up. You need the u-bolts and shock plates from the 8.25". The parking brake cables from the 7.25". The U-joints are the same. The driveshaft will need to be shorted.

Where do you guys find all the A-body 8 1/4 housings? The only ones I've seen are in the 340-360 cars and they're hard to come by. I find the A-body 8 3/4 easier to find since they were used in a lot of 318 cars. Is there another A-body engine combo the 8 1/4 was used besides the 340-360?

I got my 8 1/4" axle assy from a '73 or '74 318 Duster with disk brakes.

Thanks Bud. I went looking for an 8 1/4 rear about two years ago. I checked 5 or 6 A-body disc brake 318 cars and they had 7 1/4 rears, so I quit looking. Now I know they are out there, the hunt will continue. I want it and the discs for my '68 V-100.

It's been over ten years ago, so my memory is a little fuzzy. It may have been a stick(3 spd floor shift) car.

I have a 73 Swinger parts car in the yard, 318, 904, disks and 8 1/4. I also have another 8 1/4 with 2.94 posi that came out of a 75 Duster 318, 904 combo.
