| Post subject: | Storing a cylinder head? |
So last week I picked up a cylinder head. The plan is to have some work done on it, but while I plan and save for the work I want done I need to store it somewhere. Now for the questions... 1) Rust, should I worry about it rusting over the next couple months or is that easy to take care of when I'm ready to get the work done? 2) Best methods to prevent it from rusting? For now I coated the non-painted areas with some oil. 3) What is the best position to lay it down and on what kind of a surface (carpet, wood, cement?) as to not damage anything? Any advice is greatly appreciated! |

1, 2 and 3, Use LPS#3. Coat it on all sides and stand it on end in a plastic bag. |

Thanks Ted. There is already a bit of rust in areas. Will I need to remove the rust first? Also, where do you get a bag that large? |

A big 30 gallon black leaf bag will work perfect. |

So any suggestions on removing the rust already on the head? I'm leaning toward soaking it in Zep Rust Remover, any objections? |

Chances are the shop you take the head to will hot tank it, hot tanking will clean just about everything off. I would oil the unpainted surfaces, put it in a bag and leave it at that. |
