 Post subject: Flywheel Question
PostPosted: Thu Sep 19, 2002 6:31 pm
I'm in the process of picking up parts to install a V-8 Blowproof behind my slant six. I have the Belhousing and I am keeping my eyes open for a flywheel to have modified for the slant 6 pattern. My question is, were any of the factory flywheels steel? Possibly the 340? Or were they all cast like the slant 6. I know the 340 would turn some serious RPM, and thought maybe they would be a good candidate ? I know the blowproof will contain everything, but I'd just as soon not have an explosion in the first place.

Thanks, Rick

i've had a few m/t cars and as far as i could tell the flywheels were all cast iron, with the only differences being in the diameter of the crank hub and weight. i picked up a weber aluminum flywheel a while back and it appears to be a real nice piece.
my question to you is where did you get a blowproof bellhousing to fit a slant six? i really want one.

McLeod can make you any flywheel with any center..............so they can make you a 340 alumn. flywheel with a slantsix center to go with your small block bellhouseing.

and for the bellhousing post you have to redrill a small block or big block one to match up. Do a search to get details.

James I used a scattershield from the 340 Mopar than made a plate that bolts to the slant 6 block and the shield. The plate was made from 3/8" thick aluminum. The stater was than mounted low on the slant engine. I have used this for three years with no problems.I am also using the redrilled 340 flywheel.

dave-
so what you're saying is that i can run a small block shield on a slant? the 3/8 al. plate you fabbed bolt to the block, then the shield bolts to the plate? on the redrilled flywheel, i suppose the "off center" hole is the one that is the target of the operation? the s/b flywheel is necessary because of the new starter location? is the starter mounted to the "block plate?" if so, then would it be possible to mount the starter closer to the crank ceterline to use the smaller flywheel? i was hoping to run my n.o.s. weber al. flywheel (faster revs/clutch action.)

I would call Lakewood or Summit and get info on what they have available. My thinking is that they may have a smaller sacttershield for some other application that would hold thw SL6 122T flywheel and allow good starter positioning. On all the aftermarket scattershields I have used, the starter nose locationing "cup" was a bolt-in piece that could be mover with ease. ( drill a new hole)
Here is some general clutch - flywheel info:
