| Post subject: | Power Steering Pump & Pulley Q |
I just got a used power steering pump shipped to me. The pump looks to be the one with the small hex in center of shaft, or the 1.2 type equipped with a 7 inch diameter pulley. My existing pump has the ‘plain end’ shaft, I believe it to be the .96 model, and has a 5 ½ inch pulley. According to the FSM, this pump has the ability to compensate for higher or lower engine rpm, by automatically reducing boost over 3000 rpm. Mounting brackets for booth pumps look to be a bit different, but it looks as if this used pump will bolt up to my engine bracket. Should I keep the larger pulley on the used pump, or swap my smaller pulley on to it? Am I going to have even more ‘over boosted’ steering above 3000 rpm, than my present pump, keeping in mind, that due to gearing, 60 mph is about 3000 rpm for my car? Bill |

ok I maybe lost. But here goes. If the new pumps pulley is close to or the same as pulley driving it pump rpm will be reduced. depending on pump valving and pressure this maybe not good. If new pulley is smaller than drive pulley pump is overdriven. Ita a drive ratio thing. lol shadetree |
