Hi my name is Brian and I wanted to get some info on rebuilding my engine. I have a 73 dart with the 225 /6 with 68,000 original miles. I found a website where I can get a rebuilt longblock and I was wondering if I should go that route and add preformance parts if that would be easier. I know nothing of rebuilding engines and I wanted to see if anyone knew where to start. I wanna get some hp out of a /6 without going turbo. I was reading about using a different manifold but not sure what to get so i can use a 2bbl carb and headers. Any info would be greatly appreciated as I am willing to learn. I have a shop to do the work in I just need some guidance. Thanks |

With 68k on the clock, unless the engine has been stored in salt water, been on fire for an extended time, or severely abused, it should not need to be replaced. Take a clear picture of your brake pedal for us. Get yourself some Factory Service Manuals, and start learning, or your wallet will be at the mercy of everybody that wants to sell you something. Most of the generic rebuild places provide Grocery getter parts, not the ones you will want for a performance build. Your '73 Engine is actually one of the best to start with, and you never know what your going to get from an internet engine place. Read the FAQ's, and Articles. There are lots of ways to go. Work up a budget, and that will determine what is feasible. CJ |

A lot of extra power can be "found" thru adjustments and "tuning" on your current engine. After tuning, next comes the intake and exhaust improvements you noted. Take small steps, ask questions and keep the car running so you can enjoy it while fixing it up. DD |

i was looking at the carb, it is a new replacement holley 1920 1bbl and noticed the butterfly valve is always fully open the choke stove as i was told adjusts the butterfly valve doesnt work the wire that heats it up isnt connected so the valve just stays open all the time. i think its running real rich as the spark plugs have black buildup soot on them. I assume and correct me if i'm wrong but that would mean the timing is way out? I also think of timing when i shut off the car sometimes it would burb and belch then give out. i'm pretty sure i need to rebuild my tranny as well it is starting to slip sometimes while driving and it stays in second until i hit about 35 then shifts into 3rd. I have a 904 tranny. I know i have many issues to address and i'm not sure where to start. I know i need to do the brakes, tune-up - timing ect, tranny, i just got new u-joints i'm putting in on sat as i get the clunk when i shift into gear. Thanks for the info that you guys gave I realize before i can upgrade the motor i need to fix a few things first. |
