What are the best spark plugs to use in the Slant 6? I was also thinking of putting in a Flowmaster Delta 50 muffler. You can hear what it sounds like here. <A HREF="http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/web10/SePerfMuff5.html">http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/web10/SePerfMuff5.html</A> Someone recommended a Walker Dynomax Super Turbo with a full 2 1/4" exhaust. Which will sound better and which will give better performance? |

Best spark plug? I'm not going there, but I will share I've selected for our engine. The MP book recommends Champion N-14Y for stock engines and N-10Y or N-12Y for high performance applications. Also, per the manual: "If the end plugs tend to foul during warm-up, the cylinders #1 & 6 may want a hotter plug such as the N18Y" I've heard and read enough about fouling on the #1 & 6 cylinders that I decided to run a "mixed-set" in my engine from the start. My friendly NAPA store didn't have the Champion plugs, but they did have a good selection of (gulp)Autolite Platinums. I have purchased AP65's for cylinders #1 & 6 and AP63 for cylinders #2-5. These are a cross for the N-12Y and N-10Y plugs. Hope this help, Gilly tlg225ccr@aol.com |

As with the spark plugs, I'm not claiming "this is best". This is what is going on our car. We have split headers. I have 40" long 1.75" pipes running back to a Flowmaster "Y" Collector PN FLO-Y214300A (2 1/4" primary / 3" collector). The Y Collector is directly attached to a Warlock PN BIG-50560 muffler. The Warlock is neat because it has a removable "Lake plug" that will you to run straight exhaust at the drag strip. Summit Racing has both of these items... Still "figurin-out the over the axle piece, but I'm leaning towards some oval tubing in one of my kid's Streetrodder magazines. All that said, the MP manual recommends the street Hemi muffler PN 2781300. I washed out trying to find that one. Gilly tlg225ccr@aol.com |

Good guy to deal with. Can make both the original 2¼" or a 2½" piece, we ordered the 2½" driver's side pipe and it came UPS in about a week to NH. It fit just like a factory part. Anyway, in my engine I had a set of ACs and couldn't get rid of a slight miss under load, nothing serious, just anoying. Did wires, cap and rotor, set timming, changed EGR valve, nothing, for the heck of it one day I picked up a set of Champions, the brand I usually run, and the engine ran great again. The only reason I had tried the ACs is the store where I bought them was out of Champions. Like I said, some engines will like one brand, others will like another--sometimes. : : <A HREF="http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/web10 ... f5.html</A> : : Someone recommended a Walker Dynomax Super : Turbo with a full 2 1/4" : exhaust. I have used the conventional Bosch Platinum plugs for years. They make a good plug. The multiple electrode design has come and gone for years. I think it was around 1967 when Dad bought a set mail order. They worked, but when they wore out, conventional plugs went back in in their place (1964 390 Thunderbird engine). Quote:
: : What do you think about the Bosch Platinum #4s? 1) They are VERY expensive 2) If I'm looking for more spark, I'd be inclined to put in a hotter coil or perhaps a MSD (we're using a MSD6AL). I'm sure these plugs will work. However, with all else the same about your ignition system, I really don't think you'll see any real improvement over another new conventional style plug. I also agree with another of these responses, some engines do "prefer" one plug brand over another. Even when it's cross-referenced to another brand, that doesn't mean they are identical. I think it is either a variation of the electrode geometry or the heat range. My boat engine only gets Champions, for example even though I have/do use the Bosch plugs in about 8 or 9 cars over the years. My $0.02. Hope I didn't hurt anyone's feelings. Over all the years of working on Slants, I have noticed that they do not really care much about which brand plug I screw into a stock SL6. I tend to run the hottest plugs possible in my stock engines, this usually ends-up being the Champion N14Y because it's the most common. (at least was common untill that plug was discontinued and replaced by the "colder" N12Y S.B. V-8 plug) The N12Y works pretty good for a higher compression SL6. If you look at different heat range plugs "side-by-side" you will quickly see that the hotter the plug rating, the further the electrode tip sticks-out. The longer tip helps get the spark (and flame front) closer to the center of the A/F "charge" for a faster & more complete burn. (remember that a 225 SL6 has .140 of negitive deck height, combined with the amount of recess the plug's tip has into the head's combustion chamber) All this "piston clearance" puts way more A/F mixture below the plug tip then is above it. If I were to pick a brand I like the best I would say NGK, never noticed a real differece using NGKs in a Slant but my Mopar V-8 really seemed to ran better on them. DD |

O.K. I'm going to put my 2 cents worth in here. I have used just about every brand plug made, in all kinds of different engines, during the last 40 years. I have had good results with all of them. I have had bad results with many of them. Two plugs I absolutly will not use, Splitfire, and Champion. Splitfire, because they are a ripoff. Champion, because I had a plug problem many years ago, that almost ruined a motor, and Champion said tough. I am very brand loyal. I am also a SOB, if I think I have been given the shaft. I have not put a Champion plug in any thing for 30 years. I use mostly Autolites, good plug, and when i had a problem, they made it right. I am using NGK in my nitrous motor. Off the soapbox. I run MP elect. ignition with orange box & MSD Blaster 2 coil on both motors as well. For exhaust, I run a 2.5 inch single system with a Dynomax Hemi Super Turbo muffler and tailpipes exting in the stock location. The Hemi Super Turbo (available at Summit) is a few inches longer than the standard Super Turbo and is a little quieter. They have a nice, mellow sound, not too throaty. Personally, I love the way Flowmasters sound on V8's but not on 6's... just my preference. I have heard that the Super Turbo flows better than the Flowmaster but I haven't seen any actual flow numbers, etc. to back it up. Ron rheying@pacifier.com |

I know I dont have the experience you all must have with this, but on my slant I run the Splitfires, yeah bucks a plug, they might run as well as a champion, but there was a deal goin on, 4 bucks a plug with a 3 yr warranty, I take off my plugs every month no matter the mileage and take em back to Kragen/Checkered Flag, and get a new set. I did break in with champions and the motor hated em, I even had champions on my 440 and it hated em. My 440 now sits with Delco rapidfires. it may be a split fire, but i still get 13 street and 18 freeway out of em.. ![]() Pyper70@aol.com |
