Who makes a good quality muffler today? The expensive Walker I bought only lasted 15K miles or so before rusted through.

Cool to cold weather, short trips, not getting engine & exhaust up to temperature will all contribute to an early exhaust rust-out.

One has to drive the car ten or more miles to heat her warm enough to drive off all condensation from the exhaust system, particularly one with a muffler stuffed with fiber glass located near the rear of the car. Also the condensation weep hole has to located at a low point when muffler is installed, otherwise a small pond will form in there…

There are a lot of stainless steel mufflers available. What's the application?

I just installed a stainless "Jones" brand big boar muffler on my truck. Nice sound, not too cheap, appears well built.

Thanks. The orig. muffler lasted ~15 years, the replacement ~3 under more-or-less similar conditions (except the old one saw Michigan winters w/ lots of snow&salt, while here in Virginia there's very little snow&salt), which makes me suspect that their best Walker muffler isn't as good as it ought to be - it seems to have rusted from the inside out in more than 1 place. I had installed all Walker parts from the converter back along with the muffler, and the fit & finish just wasn't nearly as good as I expected from Walker.

This is for my (inherited) Ford '92 3.0L base V6 Ford Taurus: ~9x5x19" oval body, offset 2" inlet & opposite offset 2" outlet. I've looked a bit but haven't seen a stainless muffler that would fit very easily. I'm just looking for a stock-ish replacement that will last and a good quality manufacturer.

My Maremont (sp?) mufflers on my '71 Plymouth are from the early '80s and still seem just fine, but I suppose I'll have to replace them some day and then I'll probably go stainless from the manifolds back.

This might sound a bit sporty, but it should last.

It's amusing that your 3 liter Ford has a smaller exhaust system than my 2 liter Neon.

Thanks all, esp. Joshua - that last one looks like just what I need.

I had bought my exhaust from NAPA, and had been told by somebody it had been made by Walker - now I'm told NAPA exhaust is made by SoundMaster - so I may have been totally wrong to blame Walker and I don't know who made it. I couldn't find any maker's mark other than the NAPA # on the parts or box.

My wife phoned NAPA and complained; they gave us a new muffer, but couldn't tell us what the warranty was or is (the printout just says ask). The 3 yr old NAPA muffler had holes rusted through both top & bottom and most of the insides were gone.

The walker quietflow I got from RockAuto (had walker part number on it) came in a NAPA box................

The Magnaflow I had in my Satellite lasted for around 8 years of daily use.. Was still on the car when I sold it. It really wasn't that loud.
