Is there any real advantage of running a Spicer 8 1/4 over a 7 1/4? There seems to be plenty of these around and looks eaiser to swap than the 8 3/4. Any sage advise????
Thanks, Cycledog

I used to routinely swap those 7 1/4's out. I wish I had taken a picture of the stack of 'em I took to the scrap yard. Honest, it was almost 5 feet tall. I've broken them behind sl/6 auto's.
On the other hand, my bracket 360 Duster never hurt my 8 1/4. And they came with BBP and 10" brakes.

I have broken countless 7 1/4 rear ends and in my mind, anything would be better.
I tend to use the 8 3/4 when I convert to a larger rear end assembly. I like the "drop-out" center section feature the 8 3/4 has, that makes it easy to do quick gear ratio changes.
I have run 8 3/4 rears behind some pretty stout engines (SL6 to 500 H.P. 440s) without any trouble or failures. (well I did have one broken axle shaft once)
