im having a problem with my gas gauge working properly. When we ground out the gauge by itself it works properly. Also we replaced the sending unit. any ideas? |

If it's simply inaccurate that's what you get with the aftermarket sending units. The one in my '67 Valiant reads full for some time then drops like a rock to E when it still has about 6-8 gallons left in the tank.

Hi Joe, With some of our older A Body Mopars, the fuel tanks have been cleaned and then coated and sometimes there is a problem getting a good ground with the sending unit because the inside of the tank has the new coating on it. So check the ground in the gas tank and that may take care of the problem. I have to have that checked on my 1962 Dodge Lancer. New sending unit but no good ground yet. I believe that sending unit is grounded by the ground strap that connects to the fuel line and its nipple at the tank. As rust & road crud builds up on the line & strap the electrical connection degrades. Clean & remake the ground strap connection, and check for continuity. Sometimes bonding the tank, rather, running a ground wire from tank to a good ground on the frame will help as well. |

This made me nuts also. Net was (as Josh states) the resistance of a brand new / aftermarket sender obtained from Rock was way out of tolerance. My 77 Dodge Van manual says 73 (+/- 12) ohms empty, 9.6 (+/- 1) ohms full. On the new sender I was seeing 100+ ohms at full - and of course no gauge reading. For a quick sanity check you can validate the resistance without removing the sender. I cleaned and reinstalled my orginal and was good to go - but only for a few weeks. On my unit, ground is provided by the ground stap that screws to the frame. Doesn't rely on tank steel for sensor ground. |

sorry guys. had no internet for a bit there. thanks for the ideas. my gauge reads 3/4 of a tank when full and then bout 8 gallons later it says empty. i have 1964 valiant and got the sending unit thru laysons at mopars at the strip. thanks agian for the help. |

I think my float on the sending unit may be stuck because my gauge reades a 1/4 of a tank no matter what is in it. |
