I bought a 1965 904 tranny and now I need to find a shift cable for it, but there are different shift cables available, column shift and console shift, are those cables different in any other way then the length of the cable ?

I don't know too much about pre-67 transmissions,but I think the valve body in the trans was even different,push button vs steering column or consol shift.

I don't think the valve bodies are different, maybe just the cables
Does the transmission have any arms or levers on the exterior?

The transmission & valve body is the same (65 only, 6 detent positions) but the cables / linkage is different. (the shifter mounting ends change)
Cables made for one assembly can not be used on the other.
What is your need... cables for a 65 column?
