Can anyone tell me the best way to remove the timing cover gasket without shredding my cover?

Please help.

If you've got access to a wire wheel mounted on a bench grinder, those work quite well.

: The gasket is a metal ring that is pressed into the opening. I need to seperate the metal ring...it is in real tight. I have tried to gently pry it out and use needle nose pliers, but no avail. I could use more force, but I am afraid it will bend the cover. Maybe the answer is to cut it out with some snips. I thought there might be a better solution.

I don't think a wire wheel will get the metal ring out.

If you are talking about the crankshaft seal, it's more indtimidating than difficult.

Lay the cover on an even, hard surface, engine side down. Take a heavy screwdriver and put the tip between the cover and the seal ring and drive the old seal out. It's not that delicate. The new seal can be driven in using a block of wood to distribute the pressure across the face of the seal.

Are you talking about the front main seal?

It is the crankshaft seal, sorry. I will try this approach. Thanks for the help!

I've removed them by laying the cover on a bench, engine side up. Take a hammer & large flat ended punch(drift), and fold over(toward the center of the seal bore) the outer edge of the seal. After you fold it over in 3 or 4 areas, the seal loses its interference fit and just drops out of the cover.

Thanks alot. It came off just like you said. I have it all back together, and as soon as I get my Dutra Duals, the engine will be ready to fire up. Your help is appreciated
