Hmmm...

How much do you have to spend? and are you paying for someone else to work? or doing a fair amount yourself?

Show or Go? Both will go... but if I had the dollars, and wanted something that would stop the people walking by at a car show, then the supercharger would be my choice?

Turbo will generally be higher HP, but a positive displacement supercharger will have more torque off idle. Centrifugal superchargers give up a lot of low end and mid range torque/hp to a turbo. I prefer turbocharging myself.

I held a spare Paxton centrifugal unit I have up to the front of the Slant Six, it's going to be so darn easy to put one on it's almost unfair.

I'll post pictures when I get around to it, gonna be a while. Gotta finish replacing the floor pans, convert to disc brakes, and swap in an OD four speed.

The 1954 Kaiser McCulloch centrifugal unit on the Chevy 283 in my Model A makes almost nothing at idle, around 3-4 psi at cruise, and 6-7 psi when you really get honking on it. Not a super crazy set up at all, but still loads of fun and enough pressure to barbeque the tires on demand!

Is that the one used on the Studebakers 289 V8?

Yep, pretty much. The unit on the Model A is a VS57 with the low-boost internals removed, the stock McCulloch VS57s had an electric solenoid that allowed the supercharger a low and high output depending on throttle position.

The Studebakers used a SN series blower, which is essentially a VS57 with a single blower speed and thus a shorter front nose section.

Studebaker used both variable speed and single speed McCullough/Paxton superchargers. VS models on the Golden Hawks and Packard Hawks, SN models on the later Jet Thrust engines. The internal drive system is fine for around 7 psi for long term use. Much more than that and the planetary ball drive starts failing fast.

Paxton SN-2000 installations on late model Mustangs make 8 psi out of the box with the stock big pulley and more than 10 psi with smaller pulleys.

The thing that kills the ball drive is overspeeding the blower, as it's self contained and lubricates itself. When moving too fast the bearings do not get adequate lubrication and bad things happen.

The real limit on the VS and SN units is they don't move a lot of air volume compared to modern supercharger and turbocharger units, but then again, the case was originally designed in the early 50's and didn't change a whole lot through 2000 when Paxton introduced the NOVI series of superchargers...

Personally, and a lot of people may not agree with this, but I think it's worth having turbo and EFI as I think it gives you a lot more options in terms of how you can tweak your car, of course this requires skill, and I've never had an EFI slant.

my two cents.

There's a guy on Moparts (and probably here too!) with 22 psi on a slant six. I believe he's had up to 30 psi on a slant six, if I remember correctly.

Here's a thread from the last time he had it out. Incredible!
