Post subject:  Valve noise.

If I really floor it in my 225, there's some valve noise happening. It was worse before I recently adjusted the timing, but it still happens if I really floor it. I was looking in the manual and it said it my be worn push rods or tappets, but a friend of mine said it might need lead substitute to help lubricate the valves.

Just thought I'd poke around in here for thoughts. I haven't given it a compression test (yet), but other than the minor valve noise at hard RPM, it seems to be running really, really well.

Sounds like detonation or "pinging" from too much ignition advance, for the fuel quality.
Does the noise reduce or goes away when you run 91 octane fuel?

I agree. Try pulling your rubber hose off the advance unit and take it for a drive. If it is less/gone you have to much timing.
Are you running points or electronic?

It's electronic. I do have the timing advanced a bit. I'll turn it down. Thanks.

So I can't get it running smooth without the timing super advanced. I'm suspecting there may be an issue with the vacuum advance. Any thoughts? What's the best way to check and see if the vacuum advance is operating properly?

Have the valves been adjusted lately? What is your idle speed using a tachometer?

Is the timing mark steady when you have a light on it or is it jumping around? If it's juumping you have timing chain issues.

You may need to limit the centrifugal advance in the distributor so you can run more initial and get less total.

I have recently adjusted the valves. I don't have a tach or timing gun. I will pick one up this week.
