I have seen many of NP-435s in various dodge pickups, but I have only seen a handful with the A833 in it, all of them 2wd. Did they ever make a 4x4 version of this trans? I know they had the "fuel miser" trucks in the 80's but those are kind of rare trucks. |

I've never seen a 833/4WD truck,My father had an '82 dodge D150 2BBL leanburn S/6 w/ 833 OD but it was 2WD.I remember the word "miser" on the back window, but I can't remember if another word was before that.I do remember that it got better than 20 MPG,and we never had one problem with the leanburn,or the cat in the 370,000 miles we owned the truck. |

Well I am glad some people can get decent mileage out of those tanks. I probably get 12/13 in the city with my 87 D-150 (auto). I dont have a clue what it would get on the highway though, it does not like the whole 55+ idea. The reason I am looking around for a 4x4 A-833 is I am thinking about building a 70s ramcharger with a regular dodge cab, so it would be an extra short pickup, and I would like to put a manual into this tank and OD is a must. |

12-13 MPG is good for stop and go city traffic.I live in a remote area with nothing but easy highway driving, maybe I should have specified that in my post, but it is "real world" for me. |

I researched this same thing a little while back. I do not believe Dodge ever made an 833/4x4 either. But that didn't stop me from trying it. Here is some info you might find useful: An NP435 is ~24.5" long (Bellhousing to tail) A 2wd 727 auto is ~35" long A long tail A833 is ~35" long My A833od / NP205 combo is going in a long bed truck, so I think I can still pull it off. Even with the shortest intermediate driveshaft possible, my transfer case will still sit under the very front of the bed. I need to see how much shorter a short tail A833 is, to see if it's worth trying to switch? As it is, the shifter arm mounts on a bracket, that comes forward and up from the front mounting boss on the long tail tranny... Let me know if you want measurements on the short tail, the transfer case, or something else. |

Thanks for the info Zorg, I am glad someone else has looked into this setup before. I am just slowly running ideas in my head about what I am going to do with the stuff I have. D-150 /6 auto is a dog and needs some help, 79 Ramcharger is bad shape body wise, but it still can run and is mechanically sound, then I have a spare 318/727 sitting. Can't do anything until summer hits and I am out of school and land a job/internship though. |

I was under the Dart today for some suspension stuff, but put a tape on the short tail A833. It is ~31", so not much shorter than the long tail. Hm, is it Rockwell that made the top loader axles? That might make the combo possible under a Ramcharger? |

Rockwells would be insane, it would be as tall as it is long! Since the ramcharger has a nine inch short wheel base then the regular short bed trucks, which is one reason I want to use it. Of course I can't find the photo of what it would look like. The biggest hurdle if I do start this project is finding another truck cab that is not completely rusted, besides figuring out the transmission if I get an OD 833. |
