We got around to filling the NOS bottle and "shaking-out" a new Fogger II nitrous system on the SL6 Dragcar.

Bob Stepp, my son Allen and I took the car out to Sacramento raceway for Friday night Test & Tune, knowing darn well that there was a big divison 7 "Governor's Cup" race comming-up on the weekend, the place was packed & a qualifing mad-house.

Waited for hours to do the first no spray baseline pass, I got paired-up with a 66 289 "Stang" and got the best of him with a 14.63 @ 91.8 mph to his 15.31 @ 91.3 mph. He freaked-out when he stopped by to say congrats. and saw the car was a Slant powered.

We install the NOS bottle and turned the timing back to 26º total. Did a trial "burp" on a service road out at the end of the track and things were not right. Went back to the pits and found an NOS line popped-off and a few other leaks, thrashed and got it all fixed. No big deal because the tack was still working through qualifing hundreds of pro cars.

Back into line, wait and wait and wait some more. Made our second pass at 10:30 pm, got matched-up with pretty serious looking late model 5.0 Mustang. (big hood scoop, slicks, roll cage, etc.)
Knowing I was "out-gunned" and that the run was a heads-up test pass, I decided to leave on the second yellow bulb and redlighted. (.411) Hit the NOS right as the car left the start and grabbed a 60 ft. time of 1.86 to the Stang's 1.96, We gave the starting line crowd a good show by putting a couple of car lenghts on that "high profile" 5.0.

Wow, the spray really made the car pull hard, it even sounded different. About 150 feet from the finish line we were past the 5500 redline and the engine laid-down. We watched the Mustang drive-by us at that point. (webmaster Chuck was in the passanger seat, along for the ride!) We pulled a 13.21 @ 101.4 mph to the Stang's 12.78 @ 107
The car did not miss a beat, even as we over reved it through the finish. Looks like I need to find some 4.30 gears!
So we took 1.4 seconds and 10 mph off the car's time with a 80 HP "shot". See the link below for more pics of the NOS set-up.

Wonderful! Sounds like a hell of a lot of fun. I can only imagine what it felt like when you pushed the button for that first run. What do you think you'll run with the different gears?

Hey, Doc
Fun ain't it. Wait till you hit it right on the line. What fuel pressure are you running on the nitrous side? If you have at least 6.5 lbs,but don't go over 8lbs (flowing), you can go "square" on the jets. Should pick up, running a little leaner. Also, my system likes a bottle pressure between 950 and 1000 lbs.

I have some taller slicks I can put on the car and we need to get out to the track on a *real* Test & Tune night so I can make a bunch of passes. (not the pro qualifing "circle jerk" deal we had to go through to make two runs)The good news is that I complained to the tower about not getting any track time and they gave me a "rain check" for another T&T night

For the NOS run I set the fuel pressure at 7 lbs but never confirmed that it stayed there. My guess is that it stayed pretty close, the fuel regulator seems to "drift" a bit and the fuel gauge was pegged at 12 lbs when I staged-in with the second pump running for a few moments. I also think I can add-in a couple of degrees of timming, may-be try 28º total. The plugs looked perfect with # 3 & 5 showing little lighter, with a small bit of "pepper" on them. I have some #21 jets on order so for my first "rejet" I think I will try a 20 / 21 combo.

Once I get to know this system, time to swap the good race motor back in!
Boy it felt good to have the car running faster, it's been suck in the 14s for way too long.

Dr Dodge,
I had fun reading your post and the pictures of your engine here and on your website are a something else!
I’m not sure how often you are at the Sacramento raceway but the next time you are there I would like to make the drive out to see your beast and watch the whole event! I live in Santa Cruz County so I’ll have to drive my 67 signet out there. Is that a radio I see in your pic? AM-Tom

Small incremental performance improvements are nice but it sure is fun when there's a sudden big "step" in performance. Have fun!

Yea, I got in on that second run. I was impressed! You should have seen the look on the 'Stang driver's face! And that 1.4 second gain was on an old motor!
