Got a simple one for you guys. Tommorow morning I'm going to find out if I need a new transmission, or a new engine. I've got this horrible metalic knocking sound/vibration that is either coming from the transmission or coming from the engine. Though the engine is the more likely culprit, I'm getting my ducks in a row in case I need a new tranny.

The Question: what I'm replacing is an 833OD from an 83 D150. I used Car-part.com to search junkyards and found a few, but I'd like to know if the exact same 833OD can be found behind an 80s vintage 318 or 360 truck. I know the bellhousings are different, but I'm wondering if any OD, large IBR trans will fit. Very important; will it be a different lenght and force me to get another driveshaft built?

Backup Question: anybody got an 833OD just lying around the garage they might want to part with? I don't need the bellhousing or clutch, don't need the shifter or crossmember.

If they did equip a V-8 truck with it, no problem...

The main things to look out for:

Trucks generally got the long tailshaft and mainshaft A-833OD (it's that same length as the old B/E body A-833 straight box...), so that's a swap and be done if the tranny doesn't need a complete overhaul.

The other version is shorter for the A/F body cars (although I have talked to a few people with 80's vans that got this option for some reason...)...

You can swap in a 3-speed truck tranny or use one of the earlier trannies if you use one of the 1975+ 3-speed 5.125" IBRs (holes drilled in retainer match the holes in the 4.8" equipped trannies...)

Good hunting, hope it's something else.
