I recently purchased a new transmission and I want to know if it is a 4-speed or Overdrive. I have 2 numbers from the transmission; C- 13546 B PP833 137 0 Thanks. |

The easiest way to tell is by the levers that the shift rods attach to. If all the levers point up, it's not an overdrive. If the 3-4 lever points down, it's an OD. Here's a great article on this forum: Ahern on 4-speeds |

I don't have any numbers but if the shift levers are still attached they both point up on a regular trans, the front lever points down on the OD. You can also count the number of turns at the input and output shafts. Put the rear lever in neutral and try the front one in both positions. One should be 1:1 and the other will either be .73 if it's an OD or 1.39 if it isn't. That is the number of turns on the output when you rotate the input 1 time. Most A body OD transmissions have one or both of the cases cast in aluminum, I don't believe any regular transmissions have aluminum cases other than rare race car pieces. Most ODs also have the smaller 904 size output spline, most A833 have the bigger 727 size. The front bearing retainer on the OD is usually larger than the regular transmission. I don't have the exact diameter here but it is larger than 4.80" |

If everything is bolted in correctly, then that works...if someone bolts the front toggle on the otherway it'll look like the other tranny, but the 3-4 shift will be reversed (up to the dash is OD and back is 3rd/direct)...you can also pull the side plate and count the gear teeth on the mainshaft and countershaft...(you may want to do that so you can see if the gears have been hammered and chipped...and see if they ran oil or ATF in the box). -D.Idiot |

Thanks to all, both levers pointed up but one was the dog legged lever from the reverse so just repositioned them and all is fine! I woulda used it annyhoo, been without my truck too long, trans is installed and working fine. robert |
