hi guys, i am new to your site. have been building rods for 30+ years. all s.b. chevs. just got a 1940 plynouth from arizona. runs fine, but not much for highway speed.
was thinking that a slant six with a 4-speed overdrive might be a good choice. i know they are a long engine, but i am able to make the mods if needed.
ANY IDEAS ON THIS??

Welcome on the board. Sounds like fun to me! The slant-6 has been adapted to many vehicles not originally so equipped. See here and here and here. I don't think there are any pictures on here, but a '40 Plymouth coupé with a slant-6 was very successfully raced in the '60s by a Chrysler employee name of McNichol. Can't remember his first name. I've got the article w/pictures stashed 3,000 miles away; maybe someone else can dig up that issue of the old Slant-6 News and scan it in for you.

This is a fabulous, knowledgeable forum that has given me the assistance I needed to move from never having done much to now having done a truck and a 49 Plymouth from engine to complete 4 speed conversion to rear ends, springs, wiring and disc brakes. I would be glad to give you some dimensions you may need and share some tips if you PM me. I even have a spare complete 4 speed setup just pulled from my new venture into automatics, if you may want a completed good setup. Just PM me...

yea, it should be interesting if i go that route.
yea dan, i could use measurements to see how far i may need to move the radiator ahead.
don't have a motor yet, so will be looking for a 225, and a 4 speed manual, with o.d. as 4th gear.
i am in no hurry with this project a the car is a driver right now, and i have several other cars including a steel 34 ford street rod.

I don't see why a Slant wouldn't work, these cars originaly had inline flathead 6's. The Slant isn't much if any longer.

Yep,

As slantasauras says, the inline flathead was in my '49. I pulled it to put in the slant. Just the usual problems....fabricate a way to do the mounts, the '49 radiator was huge but too far back into engine compartment so needed to get a newer thinner model. Also engine compartment came to a point in front and made using stock 70's alternator impossible. A low mount driver side worked fine. Lots of good steel in there to weld on! Oh, hood has to come off and it is a massive piece of metal with springs like an army tank...a THREE man job to take on and off.

yea, looks like mopar made it easy . after the hood is off, just disconnect the headlight wiring, remove the rad. hoses, and lift off the entire front clip. this would make the job a breeze compared to leaving fenders on.

i'm actually in oregon now. (7 miles south of madison)
oh yea how i remember the square and east wash. i was a member of dominators car club. we actually started the e wash thing in 80's. did all the clean up etc.
god how i hate all those political basterds that shut us down. no harm eas being done. i've always had street rods with high h.p. engines, and am looking forward to the plymouth thing. will be fun to drive , and a little different. i still have horespower cars, don't need another one of those.
i've never done anything with a slant, except drive one back and forth to work, but they were a great little engine, si i thought i'd pick a few brains on this site to get a head start on things.

god how time flys,
three years later, i'm finally getting into this project. between getting re married, moving, building a new shop (with hoist)
got the old flatty sold, front clip off, and ready to pull engine and trans this weekend. really looking forward to getting going on this thing. have three slants now. need to pick one. leaning towards the 198. , also may have aa surprise in the making. will see if it materializes. if it does, you guys will be the first to know.
going to be a challenge as the slant is almost 3" longer than the flatty. looks like firewall relocation isa in the works.

will keep posted on progress

Very cool! I used to own a 41 Dodge Business coupe. The flat head never gave up but if it had, a SL6 sure is a fine choice!

I almost bought a 40 tudor, several years ago. I remember it having a very, very cool, wood-grained dashboard in it.
