Gave up, took my '64 Valiant to the shop. 225 with a pushbutton 904. It runs and drives, but won't go beyond about 25-30MPH. I've done the shift cable and kickdown adjustments per the service manual and this forum (Thanks again, everyone!), and those seem fine. I even checked the governor, which seemed to have no issues.
The shop guys say that it is shifting into 3rd, but it is then losing fluid pressure and dropping back to 2nd. They want $450 to go into it, before parts. I had a hard time finding that rebuilt trans in the first place, so I'm bummed.
Ideas?

Sounds like who ever built that trans. messed-up.
Either the sealing rings on the front pump got damaged or broken or the "lip seal" in the forward clutch drum is not correct or torn.

Rebuilding an auto trans is not all that complex or mysterious, you may want to carefully disassemble the unit and take the forward drum to the trans shop for seal repalcement. Doing that would save you a lot of $$$

This would not surprise me. The parking pawl arrangement was definitely misassembled, and it is not that complicated.
