I live in CA where we have to smog any vehicle built after 1975. I've been having trouble finding the right pre 75 truck for the last year. Recently I found a short box truck with a slant 6 and a 4 speed. Here are the pros and cons. Pros - The body and interior look to be 9/10. Has AC, new wheels and tires, good paint, no rust, and low mileage. Cons - It's an 82 w/lean burn. The guy said he had to take the lean burn dist out and put an orange box in so it would run right and he said it runs great now. My question is, how big of a hassle would it be to bring this truck to CA and get it to pass smog? I'd have to connect the lean burn up to pass smog and then pull it to drive it until I smog it again in 2 years. Is it a huge hassle to disconnect the system? Putting on a new carb and dist is cake but I don't know what else would go into it. I'm just afraid of something not working right and me not being able to pass smog. I've never had to smog a vehicle so I have no idea how tricky it would be. |

I don't know how detailed the inspections are in California, but it might be possible to do a "stealth" HEI install where you hollow the guts out of the lean burn computer and put the HEI module in the lean burn housing and use the existing wiring to hook the HEI up to the distributor. You could leave all the components in place and just plug the hoses to any vacuum operated components you don't want. |

Thats pretty sneaky Reed. I like your thinking! Would an 82 D100 have an OBD On Board Diagnostic system? I read that they came out in the early 80's but I'm not sure if it would be in this truck. This is what I found on CA smog checks... A visual inspection, in which required emissions control components and systems are identified, and must appear connected and functional. A functional inspection which includes, as applicable, checking the functionality and/or integrity of the emissions control malfunction indicator light ("Check Engine", etc), the ignition timing, the gas cap, and the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system, if the vehicle is so equipped and a Two-Speed Idle (TSI) test is being performed. A Low Pressure Fuel Evaporative Test (LPFET) is performed on all 1995 and older vehicles. A functional check of a vehicle's On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system is also performed on 1996 and newer vehicles. Diagnostic information stored in the vehicle's computer is reported on the Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) that the motorist receives at the end of the Smog Check inspection. OBD information can save time and money when repairs are required. A tailpipe emissions test, which measures exhaust emissions using a probe inserted into the vehicle's tailpipe during testing. Vehicles pass or fail this part of the Smog Check inspection based on established emission standards, sometimes called cutpoints. Later on in the FAQ it says older vehicles aren't held up to the same standards as newer vehicles so the emissions laws on them are more lieniant. I'm guessing as long as I have the vacuum hoses hooked up correctly, I should be able to get away with it as long as it doesn't have the OBD system. |

Would someone please take a truck load of common sense and dump on the legislators heads in CA. The near 30 year old lean burn system is junk and has been a problem from day one. I can't imagine that a well tuned HEI and new carb setup would pollute more than the same truck with a crappy running lean burn system. Then again, I may be totally wrong. I thought CA had a "25 year and older" did not need to smog test? Rick |

Used to be that way Rick. The years would count up and then they stopped it at 75 and haven't budged since. You hardly see any 75-89 cars out on the road here anymore. I don't know exactly how it works, but even if the Lean Burn system did pollute less during a 5 minute test. It would pollute more overall since I'd be filling up an extra 2 gallons at every fill up with the crappy economy the engine would get. |

I have heard a rumor that SOME 87 slant powered trucks had an OBD connector. There was a board member on here a while back who claimed his 87 truck had one, but he got flamed off the board and doesn't post anymore. |

I'd buy the truck if everything that belongs under the hood is still there. I'd buy a Lean Burn air cleaner housing to gut and put the HEI module inside. The truck already has the wiring needed in place, you just have to do a little creative wiring inside the air cleaner housing and swap in a standard electronic ignition distributor. All the other emissions controls are vacuum operated if memory serves. |
