Bronze one was for the Aussie "Hemi" six. Iron only for the slant.
As far as I know.

I made-up a batch of bronze (really a nickel-bronze alloy) SL6 oil pump gears for use with steel camshafts. (roller cam applications)
An iron gear wears-out fast when use with a steel cam.
I also heat treat (carborize) the factory cast iron gears to give them a harder "skin". (case hardening)

Would you recommend getting the stock gear hardened and pressing it on a key way melling kit, is this bad practice? Or get the key way gear case hardened?

Either way works better then using the gear that came on the new Melling pump.
I can provide both types of gear, if needed.
(Heat treated factory or aftermarket gears, with a keyway slot)
