Im looking to upgrade my slant cuz frankly Im bored and I wanna be looked at even wierder. My current setup is a 70 block with a 436 lift MP cam, stock cast 8.2:1 pistons, 6 into 1 header, there are 25,000 miles on this rebuilt motor. Holley 390cfm 4bbl, 8 3/4" 3.23 non-posi. Im stuck between projects, I want a daily driver with attitude, since I already have a 440 for a race motor. EFI is in the back of my mind, right now im stuck between charging it up whether super or turbo OR putting in an A518 AOD tranny. My next step on this motor is to take off the 6=1 header and replace with a set of duals. What do you think would be a wise step for me to pursue. I have never messed around with charging systems, I am very mechanically inclined and know my way around a shop. Ideas are welcomed.

Pete

Pete,

I don't know what your budget is, but I've done a lot of this stuff to my '64 and '68 Darts. Do you like driving a stick? If so, I'd swap in a Mustang T5 trans instead of an A518. I put an A500 in my '68 and it works great, but it's heavy, was a ton of work, and didn't give quite the performance I was hoping for. It's tough to get high-stall lockup converters for it, especially for a Slant. Not that it isn't cool to drive, though.

I put a T5 in my '64 and it is a blast to drive and it's fast. Total weight for the package is about the same as a 904. Parts are easier to get too. I have TBI on my '64 and I plan on trying this DIY Megasquirt programmable EFI (http://www.bgsoflex.com/megasquirt.html) to replace the medieval Holley (late 80s) computer I have. I heard some good words about this last weekend at Richmond from a racer.

I'd say if you want to do mechanical work rather than electrical, then go with the T5 swap - most bang for your buck and your time. I can give directions on adapter plate, etc if you like. I also recommend the Clifford street rod headers for fit, or the Dutra Duals (I have "dual" Dutra duals on my '68).

Have fun,

Lou

Do it all Pete! Perhaps not all at once but plan for an EFI, supercharged slant with Lou's recommendation of the tranny. Altho my EFI/blower project had some electrical challenges, the biggest challenges and most of the work was mechanical in nature.
A blown EFI slant with a T5 would definitely be a boredom bashing, crowd pleasing, daily driver with attitude.

Cheers!

Boy, I like the sound of this!
Your are right about having a set-up / car with "attitude", that is where the fun is and that what makes the "Slant thing" so cool, we are working with a engine that is "known", well reguarded, (as "bullit proof") and Slants have not been "done to death" like some other engine / car combos.

Pick one piece at a time, knock that out and move to the next. Most important, have fun as you go.

Hey Doc, where can a fella go to get a pair of your most famous headers on here. Another thing I was thinking about, I currently have the 6=1 header that is getting banged up by the road cuz it hangs so low, I just have a 3 chamber flowmaster and dumped at the rear end. This time around I want to put the duals but will Two 2 chamber flowmasters be louder than 1 single 3 chamber.

Pete, Are those Clifford headers?, can you change that starter with the headers on? Also, how beat up? and are you selling them soon? Thanks Bruce J

Actually bruce its a Mopar Performance header. 6 tubes dump into 1 collector, i know I used 6=1 but that is not the case. the collector sits so low to the ground that 2 of the 6 pipes are actually collapsed in half so it is restrictive, I could remove the header and repipe them but the problem will come back eventually, I like the duals b/c the collectors sit next to the block. The way the header setup is now I could replace my starter, and I have the bulky 30 yr old one that weighs 15 pounds. So if i can sneak that out you can definitely squeak the ne Mopar Hi-tork starter in. As far as when my header is up for sale, its when i get the duals and figure out my exhaust setup.

I like the A518 idea! Rumors of Gear Vendors O/D for the 904 may have been false.I have a Toyota Supra 5-speed that I believe can fit, but I would rather use a GV.

I like turbos!!!!! But that is me and you have to be you. That is what makes the car yours
I would like to see a vortech or a procharger setup on a slant.

Hey Pete thanks for the info Ive been wondering about the starter clearance with mopar performance headers. Ive got to replace a very old and thin Hooker 6to1 header soon and sence Ive got a 78 D150 with a small flywheel the low ground clearance should not be a problem. with the location of the pickup's gas tank on the drivers side, a six to one with a 3" outlet still seems to be my best bet.Enjoy your personalized dayly driver, back in 1975 mine was a 69 GTX and I got to say although that was cool I'm having just as much fun now with my new slant build. Pete,
If you're like most of us cost will be a major factor. If you want to do it all and keep the cost down there is no substitute for used parts. I would recommend going with a set-up based on the '84-'87 3.8L EFI turbo Buicks. Many of the parts needed can be found on naturally aspirated 3.8L engines of the same era, and these are abundant in any junk yard. Other more turbo specific parts can be found in the "parts for sale" sections of www. ... forums/, http://turbobuicks.com/ and www.gnt ... discus/.

I'm in the process of doing this conversion, so I can't say with 100% certainty that all will work out. I haven't run into any roadblocks yet though. I'll definitely know by spring and maybe much sooner. You'll need to do a lot of homework before starting! I've done much of the homework and would be glad to help where I can.
