I will try my question again, I didn't get an answer last time, but I think someone out there must know the answer.

I am confused about the bi-metal spring that opens and closes the heat damper on my exaust manifold. I got it back from the machine shop and it is not how it was when it went in. The outside of the spring is not attached to anything, and I can't figure out how it is supposed to attach.

Can someone help me?

Thanks

Bob

It doesn't attach to anything; it just hooks over the pin.

Do I adjust the screw to make it reach the pin? If I pull on it, it snaps back. Sorry for my rookie question.

Sounds like you need to "wind" the spring another 1/2 turn or so and slip it back under the pin.

If all is correct, doing this will put enough force on the flap to close it. Once the spring heats-up, it looses tension and lets the flap open.

I had to bend the end of the spring slightly, only then would it hold a shape to stay on the pin. It was an easy fix, once I came to grips with bending the spring.

Thanks.

There should be a "hook" on the end of the spring that wraps around a post sticking out of the manifold, if I recall correctly. See if you can find another car to look at.

Thanks Chuck, with a little bending of the end of the spring I got it to rest on the pin the way it should. Seemed too easy to think that's all that had to be done.

PS-Did you get my donation for the website?
