| Post subject: | Aftermarket Air Cleaners |
Does anybody know what options there are for aftermarket air cleaners that fit the BBD 2barrel that are about 9"-10" in diameter and are low profile? Being I'm running a BBD on a modified 1 barrel intake on my A100 van, I lost about 5/8" clearance (to the underside of the doghouse cover) because of the spacer for the carb. Having a heck of a time trying to find something to fit based on the specs they show, everythings for 4 barrels. And I've tried the plastic 4 barrel to 2 barrel air cleaner adapter plate in the past. The heat under the doghouse is too intense...the thing melted! So any ideas??? |

All F-bodies (Aspen/Volare) with super six setup have an air filter with snorkel for cold air hose attachment. They fit very low over the carbruetor. I think the Diplomats and possibly all the other M- and J-bodies with non lean-burn 2 bbl. carb setup also use the same air filter box. Olaf. |

Yep.Olaf. Years ago, I pulled a super six setup from a '79 Diplomat coupe in a junkyard. |

Dodge made a van specific Super Six air cleaner, but they are EXTREMELY rare. In ten years of watching, I have only found one, and it came from California, of all places: ![]() ![]() It currently lives in my brother's 83 Dodge van. Given the high "underhood" temperatures your van experiences, I highly recommend you do not use an open element air cleaner and try and find a closed element air cleaner than can be adapted to use a cold air intake hose. 318 air cleaners will physically fit the BBD carb throat, so you will want to look for 318 equipped late 70s and early 80s cars. 5th avenues, Volares, Aspens, Diplomats, and LeBarons all had fairly low profile hoods and used drop base air cleaners on both the slant six and 318. I would recommend you try and get one of those if you have the side clearance to run it in the A100. Keep in mind that the low profile air cleaners will only fit on one direction due to special clearances for the choke linkage. Make sure the snorkel points where you want it to. Alternatively, you could grab a van one barrel air cleaner and modify the carb opening to fit a two barrel: ![]() ![]() The 79-up vans use a low profile air cleaner on all slant six applications- one and two barrel. |

Perhaps if I could find something like that, I might try that route. But before my engine took a dump, I had been running the stock unsilenced 1 barrel air cleaner assembly that I modified for the 2 barrel, as well as welded a snorkel onto it and sealed the bottom off for cold ram air supply. Only problem was that it was too small an air cleaner and the snorkel dumped right at a small section of the air cleaner (I used an oil filter housing I cut the ends off of for the snorkel, it fit the flex hose I had) It did supply forced cool air when rolling, just not well engineered for my tastes I had been intending to fabricate a nice properly sized/shaped polished aluminum airbox/cleaner with forced air but have'nt the time right now. Just want to slap something on it now to filter the air |

Autozone sells dinky little 4 inch open element air filters with chrome housings that will work on a BBD. I would only suggest that as an emergency short-short-term band-aid though. |

If you can get an air filter that physically fits the engine compartment and have a snorkel pointing in the correct direction, you can try modifying it with one of these or similar super deep air cleaner bases. There are many available, but finding one that fits a BBD size base may require some search activity. I have the same trouble in finding an air cleaner for my Aspen to go on my 2 bbl. Motorcraft carb, which uses a 4 bbl. size filter. I have bought a bottom plate similar to the one above, but would rather have an original F/M/J-body filter for use with a ThermoQuad, if I could find one. BTW, I think the snorkel on an Aspen/Volare filter would point straight into the pedals on the picture, Reed can confirm or dismiss that! Olaf. |

I still think your best bet would be to get a one barrel slant six air cleaner from a 79-87 Dodge van and modify it so it fits a BBD. That way you can still use regular air filters. Also, if you get one from a 83-up van it will already be prepped for both cold air intake and a heated air intake. It will have the proper end on the snorkel to attach a hose and a clamp to so you can route true cold air to the carb. You should be able to get a one barrel air cleaner fairly cheaply at a wrecking yard, or post a request over on www.vannin.com , those guys dump slant sixes all the time for big blocks and small blocks. |
