Hello all,

I need to R&R the yoke on my 8.75 gearset from a 7260 to 7290 yoke. I can't remember if this unit was built with a solid spacer or crush sleeve. I have not personally been into these gearsets before.

What do you need to check after replacing the yoke to make sure you haven't disturbed the gears? Just backlash, or other settings too? I assume you just retorque the pinion nut to 240 ft-lbs?

I checked the backlash and it is 0.010-0.011", which is a bit over spec, but these gears work well and the wear pattern is perfect.

It is a 489 case with earlier clutch-style Suregrip and 3.91 gears - 10 spline, if that helps.

'489'is a crush-sleeve pumpkin. I'd suggest maybe going a little light on the torque, so you don't change the pinion bearing preload setting. Use loc-tite on the pinion nut threads. Try and take note of the resistance to rotation by hand before and after you change yokes. I made a tool to hold the yoke while you torque the pinion nut, you could probably get away with a 36" pipe wrench. Don't use a rattle gun.
If you ever have the pumpkin out, you can put a solid steel spacer in and use shims like a '42'carrier.

Lou, if you have a spacer it's simple. Just R&R the yoke, ckeck torque required to turn unit before and after. Start about 200lbs and check rotational torque, increase yoke torque until you get your begining measurement (up to 260 on the yoke is OK). The crush sleeve is a hassle. When reused, it doesn't give enough bearing preload to keep the pinion from climbing up the ring gear. The more horsepower or abuse, the worse it is. I have used a shim between the yoke and crush sleeve to further crush the sleeve when a new sleeve wasn't available. I don't know how durable that was as I sold the car a few months later, but it made no noise till then. Crush sleeves are the inherent weakness of 489's.

Thanks for the tips guys. I did the swap and noticed a little less resistance. I may have to remove the yoke and reshim it as you say, or put a spacer and shims in to replace the crush sleeve.
