Post subject:  camshaft "end play"

Quite a while back, Doc had explained to me cam button installation techniques. I printed it and put it somewhere and cant find it now. I am FINALLY assembling the engine and need to know what I should set the cam endplay at.
Thanks, 63GT

This link looks to be broken.
Any ideas?
I have a cam walk issue on the "street engine"

The original content is over 20 years old.

I bet the link takes it back to the Old Deactivated forum.

Are you trying to build yourself a cam button?

Greg, yes, trying to fabricate a button to ride on the cam bolt.
Teflon, Delron, Nylon, something with those types of materials.

Lou, I assume you have a welded nut and a bolt riding in the cam bolt?

So there is no link to the older material?

Welded nut to timing cover, then used Slant 6 rocker adjuster screw with polished end. I have run a few motors regularly at 6000 RPM with no button and no troubles, so I can't say they've done anything for me. I have done this on the last few engines/covers I modified/built.

Stan, here's a link to a thread that contains a link to Doc's page on his site about this.

I hope this helps.

Use a Rocker shaft adjustment bolt.
Weld appropriate threaded nut to the correct place on timing cover.
Use an ARP Cam Sprocket retention bolt as they have the dimple already in them.

I do not think you need delrin or any special industrial plastics for this.

The reason I said a plastic material was because I ran one on my 440.
An old racer gave it to me.
It just slipped over the bolt head on a single bolt 440 cam and sandwiched the cam and timing cover.
It was some kind of plastic.

I have some wear marks on the back of my cover, so I know the cam is walking forward.
