Post subject:  Help with carb choice

i have a '71 D100 /6 3 speed. i don't use the truck for anything other than joy riding (no hauling). it has the stock 1bbl carter on it now - runs good but needs rebuilt do to leaks and previous owner removed all of the factory choke equipment. i also need to pull the manifold to fix a gasket leak. i have some options-

1. i can find needed choke equipment at junk yard and rebuild current carb.

2. i found a super six set up at a junk yard that is complete but carb would need rebuilt (has been sitting since 2002)

3. i have a new 1bbl Holley carb, not sure of part number yet - off of late model chev 6cyl. ups truck - it has an electric choke. it does not have a port for pcv hook up so i would need to make a spacer with a fitting or tap the manifold. not sure if bolt spacing is the same yet so i might need to make a adapter anyway. i work at a machine shop so that is not a big deal.

if the 2bbl set up would run a little better i sure wouldn't mind it but its not like i'm drag racing a D100 with 3 on the tree if you know what i mean. so if the super six set up is going to make big difference i would do it but if not i will probably try the Holley carb with the electric choke. am i missing any hidden issues if i go with the Holley?

thanks

Welcome to the site!

If you can, I would suggest installing the "super six" setup. Even though you don't plan to do any drag racing, this will be a worthwhile swap in my opinion.

Whether you drag or not, the 2-BBL is a very worthwhile swap. I've done several things to my 170, and the carb was the modification I noticed the most, which is cool because it was the cheapest thing I did to the car.

that would fit my 225 Slant, and do I need to upgrade the exhaust manifold from the 1 bbl carb set up that is on it now?

No. All slant six exhaust manifolds are the same size. There is no need to modify the exhaust manifold unless you are going to headers or dual exhaust. Replacing the manifold is necessary if it is cracked, warped, or the heat riser is stuck.

thanks, its not cracked, believe the the Heat riser works, will know when I fire it up, its a complete rebuild, will also know if it leaks caused by warping, and it has a new exhaust. single into a very quite exhaust. no longer need to be loud. what about the Carb? any ideals on a reliable source? Pep Boys? I think not, but its a start.
