Post subject:  Spark Plugs for Slant Six?

Hi, ive checked the FAQ and cant find any thread on spark plugs...

So here goes...Whats the best spark plug to use on the Slant Six? I would prefer if you could tell me in terms of "NGK equivalent" as it is almost impossible to find Champions or the likes this side of the Atlantic.

Im thinking either BP5ES or BP6ES? Are they any good? Oh more importantly, will they FIT?

Thanks.

The Bp5es will work. If you can get them of course go champion, but as you said they may be a bit difficult for you to get. NGK is more designed for asian motors, but they will work.

It would depend on the year of your engine. I just had this question myself and would refer you to this thread.

There are a lot of threads on spark plugs.

There are two head designs you need to be aware of. The spark plug tube head, and the peanut plug head.

The two different heads use very different spark plugs.

If you have the spark plug tube head and your engine is stock or mild, my favorite NGK plug is the ZFR5N. This is an extended reach plug that performs very well at standard or improved compression builds that don't get over 9.5:1. For higher compression the ZFR6FIX-11 works well. Currently I have Autolite XP5224's installed in my 10.7:1 compression engine. (A direct cross over for the ZFR6FIX-11.)
With Iridium plugs: Do not attempt to gap them! Leave them alone as the material is extremely hard and will flake off if you put a gap tool in there.

Now, if you have a peanut plug head, you'll need to get more agressive with the search engine, 'cause I don't know.

NGK-UR5 standard...you can go up or down one in heat range if needed as only UR-4 and 6's are available...

On the peanut plug head I run NGK UR4GP/#2869 spark plugs re-gaped plugs from .035 to .040.

Thanks for the indo. As per my user-name, mine is a 1966 dart with a 170ci Slant six :) So I guess mine is a tube head eh?

I totally don't agree. I will not put a Champion in a lawnmower, much less a car. I use NGK's in all my engines, with very good results.

This is my opinion, others will have theirs

It is if that's what's bolted to the top of the block. Many convert to the peanut to decrease leak problems, so one would be guessing in this instance.

A few weeks ago I replaced the plugs in the wife’s 2007, 3.7L Nytro. Chrysler factory installed plug was NKG’s, in this non Asian engine.

Currently I’m running Autolite sparkplugs in the slant six: “AP 26â€￾ in 1 & 6 cylinders; and “AP 25â€￾ in 2, 3, 4, and 5 cylinders.

A use of the SEARCH function will reveal a much different story. One THOUSAND ,six hundred and eight hits, to be precise.
Just type in the words "spark plugs".

I read some where, here or other place can’t remember, it was before I kept notes on such things, that running hotter in 1 & 6 corrected for fuel distribution difference. All six of my plugs exhibit same color, so something is close to being right. Can’t tell if it is because of the plugs, or all six are getting a good fuel mix, or a little of both… Beats me.

Hey, that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. LOL

Perhaps if a cam swap were to take place, I may use all the same heat plug just to see if there is a NKG'en deference.

At one time I would use Autolites, but not anymore. Read the box, most made in China.
