Ok, so I am getting ready to put my car on the street for the first time since 2007. The idle is REALLY rough, its a holly 1920 carb, here is a video of it before i set the idle speed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hCjFKmVVDc Also it likes to backup without any gas, but unless i give it more than half pedal it wont go anywhere in drive. The column shifter is very loose and the Neutral Safety switch is faulty at times. I don't know much about the specs of the motor, the trans was rebuilt with a shift kit right before i bought it |

could semi flat tires be to blame for it not wanting to move? 15psi right now. Also the brakes where broken free yesterday, they where hanging up, but this still doesnt explain why it goes in reverse smooth and not drive. |

Sounds like the Valve body was put back together wrong. Does it move forward normally in Low? (1) CJ |

Well, we drove it back to my house about 8 miles from where i bought it and it drove just fine in Drive and then the motor sat for a year without starting. And I got all the gas out of the tank before I started painting so the idle probably isn't gas. I wish I could trouble shoot it more but my neighbors hate me already so going out there with open manifold and starting it every hour to test something gets them pissed off. |

Have you checked the transmission fluid level? CJ |

Checked ATF fluid, it's in range. |

If it's cold, not running, then it's likely low if it reads in range. Get the muffler on it so your neighbors don't hate you. Then... When you start he car, set the parking brake, and put the shifter into neutral. In park the pump won't do anything. Let it run for a couple minutes. Shift back into park and check level again. Normally, after not running for a while, the level will be high when the engine hasn't been running. I'm guessing that when you have the pump running, it fills the converter, then goes low on fluid. That makes the pressure drop and it slips. In Reverse, the band is locked, and pressure is at maximum. In Break-away the cluthes have to pull in, and you don't have fluid pressure to hold them. Did you see how it acts when shifted into low (1)? When low is selected, the L/R band is applied, and full pressure is applied. It's not the same as being in drive. (Breakaway.) If the pressure is low in the transmission, the clutches won't apply and you'll have slippage. Is your TV linkage hooked up? With the Throttle valve loose, the pressure won't rise high enough to hold the clutches properly either. CJ |

I didn't get to test Low on my tranny, I will pick up a quart of ATF on my way home tomorrow and see if it is low, if not i have other uses for the ATF like spark plug wire boots and stuff. |

When my convertible sits for long periods of time it does pretty much the same thing. I have to let it idle in neutral for a minute before it wants to engage drive correctly. If i warm it up in park and just drop it into drive it takes a few seconds before it will engage and move. It probably feels like a much longer period of time when it is loud and you want it to move right now so the neighbors don't get peeved. |

CJ, Just quickie, when one has transmission pump drain-back such as you suspect here in these thread, what is the cure for this condition? Bill |

A coverter that drains back quickly is usually the result of a worn front pump bushing or converter hub. TransGo does make a "problem solver" control valve that routes fluid to the converter, when idling in park... me, I start the engine, shift to neutral, let it idle for a moment, (the fluid goes to the converter in neutral) then select a gear and go. They all drain back over time. I do exactly what Doc does if the car has sat for more than a day or so. Lou |
me, I start the engine, shift to neutral, let it idle for a moment,
Thanks Doc, that is what I have been doing as well. I guess at some point the transmission will need to be gone through. For now it shifts nicely, and the car has full engagement within a couple seconds of “N†pumping. I don’t like pulling the transmission, too much of a PIA for this old bag of bones. When it quits, I’ll fix it. Bill |

Mine takes a month or more to drain back, but under a minute to refill. |
