Post subject:  Stromberg 97 & Holley 94

I was wondering if anyone has or knows of someone using dual strombergs or holley 94's. Are they compareable to using a single 4 or harder to tune and maintain. Any benefits or drawbacks? Thanks for any info. Dean

Don't quote me but I think Lindross tried Duel Stombergs on an Offy 5041. It was in the Krylon Spl. I think he runs a Holley 390 on an Offy 4bbl now on a basically stock engine.

According to the Jan. 1961 Hot Rod Magazine article on the Offy 2X1, slant intake, it was originally available in two versions: one machined to accommodate two stock slant carbs and the other for dual 97s (or other, later 4-bolt, 2-bbls.). Over time, I think that the single 4-bbl. gained favor over two deuces, partly because of synchronization issues. Also, while 97s may be nice to look at, good ones are pretty spendy.

If you polled the guys here who have used multiple carbs, I'd bet that more of them than not have wound up using a single 4-bbl. I know that's true for guys I know who swore by (and/or at) multiple 97s back during the 50s.

No, mostly because the modern single 4 barrel can flow more than the pair of 97's...pretty to look at and were popular at the time as 4 barrel carbs were still young when the 3-deuce setup came out...by modern standards an Edelbrock 600 cfm or Holley spreadbore would flow more than the yesteryear 97's (which were set up to flow more than the old Carter WCFB, and Holley "bubble gum machine" 4 barrels).

Synchronization plays a part in this, but if you need to breathe for performance a modern AFB/AVS/TQ, 4150/4160 has a CFM you are looking for farther up the spectrum as needed...

Right you are, D.I. I just kinda assumed that looks are his top priority if he's asking about the venerable old 97. ;-)
