Post subject:  Carb shooting out gas when trying to start

I just put on a new holley 1920. When I go to start the car gas is shooting out of the carb and flooding. Gas everywhere. What do I do to solve the problem?

Stuck float or crud under the needle (fuel inlet).

Can we assume the old carburetor didn't do the same thing? Worn out or something? Why did you replace the original carburetor?

Where did you get the new one? If it has some sort of warranty, take it back and excersise that warranty. You paid for it.

If no warranty, have you gone through it to make sure everything is set right? Do you still have your old carburetor so you can compare parts like the jet and so forth?

Did you check the float level? make sure it isn't stuck?

Buy a quality rebuild kit, take it apart, rebuild it, and make sure everything is set up precisely as the Engine FAQ rebuild and adjustment procedures outline.

The needle in the fuel intake, that should close for fuel when the floats raise, is stuck, or the floats does not work, or some foreign object is keeping the needle from closing! Check that the the fuel intake needle and floats move freely, and that the floats are intact and not leaking (which causes them to fill with fuel and sink, which opens the needle valve to let in more fuel). Please report back if the problem is still there after that source of failure is eliminated.

Wack on the top of carb where the fuel line goes in with the handle of a screwdriver,3 raps should do it.My bet is the needle is lightly stuck.Mark
